Meta Delays Muse Spark API Amid $145 Billion Spending Pressure

According to monitoring by Beating, Meta (META) has repeatedly postponed the release of the API for its latest AI model, Muse Spark, with no confirmed launch date so far. A spokesperson stated on Wednesday that they are currently testing the API with partners, aiming for a release in June 2026. The delayed launch has raised concerns about Meta's ability to monetize its substantial AI investments. The company's capital expenditure plan for this year is as high as $145 billion, and in April 2026, its stock price plummeted over 5% due to spending exceeding expectations. As Meta's first closed-source model, Muse Spark refuses to disclose its design blueprint and software weights, allowing developers to access it only through the API. In internal benchmarks, Muse Spark's performance rivals that of flagship models from OpenAI and Anthropic, and it surpasses xAI's Grok in most tests. However, apart from a few third-party evaluation agencies, most developers have yet to test it within the Agentic Harness framework. Due to the inability to sell the API interface, Meta can only introduce paid subscriptions across Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Meta AI bots to offset costs. CEO Mark Zuckerberg indicated that renting out excess computing power in the form of cloud services in the future is not ruled out. Prior to Muse Spark, Meta canceled the release of its Behemoth model due to performance issues and subsequently restructured its AI department, establishing the Superintelligence Lab (MSL) led by Alexandr Wang, with Muse Spark being a product developed by the lab's confidential division, TBD Lab.
