What is SOL?

Solana is a highly functional open source project that banks on blockchain technology’s permissionless nature to provide decentralized finance (DeFi) solutions. While the idea and initial work on the project began in 2017, Solana was officially launched in March 2020 by the Solana Foundation with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. To learn more about this project, check out our deep dive of Solana. The Solana protocol is designed to facilitate decentralized app (DApp) creation. It aims to improve scalability by introducing a proof-of-history (PoH) consensus combined with the underlying proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus of the blockchain. Because of the innovative hybrid consensus model, Solana enjoys interest from small-time traders and institutional traders alike. A significant focus for the Solana Foundation is to make decentralized finance accessible on a larger scale.

Solana reduced network slot time to 350 milliseconds

Solana has reduced its network slot time to 350 milliseconds, a first since the network's launch, announced Jacob Crick, VP of Engineering at Solana Foundation. He stated the next target is 300 ms. Prior to this change, the average slot time was 360 ms, already below the network's original 400 ms target. This is part of a broader plan, introduced in June, to progressively cut the slot time from 400 ms to 200 ms. The goal is to improve network responsiveness and accelerate transaction confirmations. The plan involves a total of four 50-ms reductions. These changes are scheduled to be implemented on the mainnet with the release of the Agave v4.2 validator client from Anza, although the timeline is tentative. The underlying proposal for the slot time reduction, SIMD-0525, was approved and incorporated into the code on May 14.

Solana cuts blockchain slot time to 350 milliseconds

Solana has reduced its blockchain slot time to 350 milliseconds, the first reduction since the network's launch. According to Solana Foundation VP of Technology Jacob Creech, this marks a "new era" with a next target of 300ms. Average slot times are currently 360ms, down from the original 400ms target. The reduction is part of a broader plan to eventually cut slot times to 200ms to improve network latency and confirmation speed. This initial cut is the first of four planned 50ms reductions. The changes, formalized in the approved SIMD-0525 proposal, are slated for implementation in the upcoming Agave v4.2 validator client, though the schedule remains tentative.

Flowra Launches Open Orderflow Auction for Solana Block Building

Solana's block building and MEV landscape is seeing a significant shift with Flowra's launch of the Open Orderflow Auction (OOA). This new system aims to decentralize transaction ordering, which is currently concentrated, by replacing reliance on private channels with an open auction where registered searchers compete. The goal is to improve competition and price discovery, allowing validators to capture more value from MEV. Early tests showed positive outcomes, including a 20.6% increase in compute units per block for one validator and reports of higher fees and robust uptime. Flowra also introduced a Programmable Block Policy, giving validators greater control over transaction inclusion for compliance needs, and partnered with Honeypot for sanctions screening. Inspired by Ethereum's successful model, Flowra believes Solana's high throughput is well-suited for open block-building auctions. The system is now available, with an institutional onboarding phase underway ahead of a broader rollout.

First Governance Vote to Take Place in the Solana Ecosystem on August 22

Amidst a strong crypto market surge in late August 2026, with Bitcoin surpassing $79,500 and Solana (SOL) gaining 21%, the Solana ecosystem is preparing for a historic first on-chain governance vote (SGP) on August 22. The Solana Company, a major institutional validator operator in Asia-Pacific, has announced its voting strategy for the first three proposals to ensure transparency for delegators. It fully supports SGP-0001, the Solana Constitution, which establishes a new governance framework where stakers have voting power proportional to their stake and can override their validator's vote. However, the company plans to vote against proposals SGP-0002, which aims to double the inflation reduction rate, and SGP-0003, proposing a shift from fixed to resource-based dynamic transaction fees. While not opposing the long-term ideas, Solana Company believes their timing is premature, as traditional capital markets require predictable rules. Fixed fees allow for reliable budget planning, whereas a sudden switch to variable costs would transfer transaction cost uncertainty to users before the ecosystem is ready.

Solana reduced slot time to 350 ms

Solana has successfully implemented the first stage of its plan to reduce slot times, lowering the target from 400ms to 350ms in mainnet epoch 1020. This 12.5% reduction is part of the approved SIMD-0525 upgrade, the first of four planned steps to ultimately achieve a 200ms slot time. The change, activated by validators on the Agave v4.2 client, aims to accelerate transaction confirmations and improve network resilience. Future reductions to 300ms, 250ms, and finally 200ms will each be activated in subsequent epochs, with the upgrade schedule allowing for a pause if missed block rates increase. Following the update, the network's average slot time was approximately 366-370ms. The SOL token price reacted positively, gaining nearly 4.5% to approach $95. The article also notes a recent incident where Solana neared a transaction finality halt due to multiple validator outages.
