The Sui L1 blockchain has announced the implementation of two post-quantum digital signature schemes as part of a long-term plan to enhance network security. The update aims to protect user accounts and smart contracts from potential threats related to the advancement of quantum computers.
The network will utilize the ML-DSA-65 algorithm for standard user accounts and SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s for smart contract-managed storage. Both algorithms are based on post-quantum cryptography standards approved by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). According to the Sui team, using two different signature schemes reduces risks, as each employs its own mathematical approach.
The core part of the implementation has already been completed and tested. Quantum-resistant storage is planned to be added to the mainnet by the end of this year, while support for accounts with ML-DSA-65 is expected in the testnet by the end of 2026. The launch of post-quantum account authentication in the mainnet is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. Along with the update, necessary updates for wallets, SDKs, and CLI will be released, while independent security audits are still ongoing.
