As the broader market weakens, UNI hits a new yearly high
On August 31st, the overall cryptocurrency market weakened, with mainstream coins generally declining. However, the Uniswap token, UNI, charted its own course, surging over 10% in a single day, briefly breaking above $5.40 to reach its highest level since January of this year.
This round of UNI's rally is not solely driven by short-term sentiment. The expansion of the Unichain ecosystem, the protocol fee buyback and burn mechanism, and the rapid growth in tokenized stock and RWA trading volume on Robinhood Chain have collectively improved market expectations regarding UNI's value capture capabilities.
Unichain, a dedicated Layer 2 network for Uniswap, utilizes Flashblocks technology to enable fast confirmations of around 200 milliseconds, driving rapid growth in trading volume and Total Value Locked (TVL). As trading experience and liquidity improve, Uniswap is evolving from a single Ethereum DEX into a multi-chain asset trading infrastructure.
Protocol revenue begins to translate into buy-side pressure for UNI
Uniswap has progressively activated its protocol fee mechanism across v2, v3, and v4. A portion of the fees generated by the protocol enters the TokenJar smart contract, which is used to repurchase and burn UNI on the secondary market.
As of the original publication time, the cumulative number of UNI burned has already exceeded 100 million tokens. This changes the previous situation where UNI primarily functioned as a governance token with limited direct value capture. As trading volume and fee generation increase, the scale of the buyback and burn is expected to expand proportionally, providing UNI with more direct fundamental buying support.
The integration between Uniswap and Robinhood Chain represents the most significant recent incremental development. The daily trading volume for tokenized stocks and RWAs handled by Uniswap has exceeded $130 million, representing a nearly 10-fold increase compared to a month ago; monthly protocol fee revenue has grown by over 100%, surpassing $30 million.
Holding above $5 is key to subsequently challenging $10
Uniswap's current protocol revenue, token burn rate, and RWA trading volume are all in an improving state, providing UNI with more concrete value support beyond the pure governance narrative.
However, the broader crypto market remains influenced by macro risk-off sentiment and tightening liquidity. In an environment where Bitcoin's price action is weak, it is difficult for a single altcoin to maintain an uncorrected, independent uptrend for an extended period. Following its rapid ascent, UNI could still experience short-term profit-taking.
The $5 level is currently the most important psychological threshold and a key support level formed from the previous yearly resistance. If UNI holds above $5 after a pullback, the structure of this breakout remains valid; once market liquidity recovers, the price could continue its upward trajectory from this base, challenging the significant resistance area around $10.
