Crypto at a Discount: Bitcoin in Russia May Become Cheaper Than the Global Market
A new cryptocurrency law in Russia, set to take effect on September 1, 2026, will establish a licensed environment for trading digital assets. While this aims to bring transparency, experts warn it could cause cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin to trade at a discount compared to global markets. This price gap is expected due to three main factors: sanctions-related risk labels attached to assets passing through Russian infrastructure, limited options to withdraw funds abroad, and an increased supply of coins from domestic miners who must sell locally.
Arbitrage opportunities to profit from this price difference are likely to be impractical. The very same risk labels that create the discount would hinder transferring assets to foreign exchanges. Removing these labels is a slow, costly, and uncertain process, as compliance systems analyze the public blockchain history of addresses. Furthermore, the high costs of licensed intermediaries' fees, compliance checks, and administrative reporting would likely erase any potential profit margin from the arbitrage.
