Understanding x402 and MPP: Two Paths for Agent Payments

The article explores two competing approaches for enabling AI agents to make payments: x402 and the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). x402, led by Coinbase, adopts a minimalist, protocol-based design. It revives the HTTP 402 status code to enable pay-per-request microtransactions directly on-chain, without accounts or intermediaries.
