On Tuesday, Bitcoin's price encountered renewed volatility, nearly wiping out previously accumulated gains and falling below the $79,000 mark. This correction occurred just hours after reaching a monthly high of $81,255—a level last observed around May 11th.
According to market data, by mid-morning, Bitcoin had dropped to $78,600, even though the Crypto Fear and Greed Index held steady at 74. The index's stable value suggests traders view the drop as a routine consolidation rather than a deeper correction, despite relevant warnings following Bitcoin's sharp rally. In fact, some market participants dismissed concerns about a 'bull trap,' explaining the $3,000 drop as normal profit-taking.
Nevertheless, derivatives data points to an upcoming high-leverage situation. An analysis by DXT Calls and Tools suggests traders are focused on liquidity clusters rather than simple round numbers. Pointing to a dense cluster of recently opened short positions, the analysis suggests that reclaiming this zone could trigger a sharp short squeeze, amplifying the growth observed last week.
On the other hand, the high concentration of long orders in the $77,300 to $78,000 range means that a break below $79,000 threatens a cascade of liquidations in this lower zone. With open interest fluctuating around $140 billion and the number of liquidations over the past 24 hours up by 128%, the market is characterized by maximum leverage and fragile confidence, the analysis concludes, resulting in Bitcoin's price being poised to follow liquidations in whichever direction the first breakout occurs.
This sentiment-driven volatility reflects a broader historical pattern highlighted by analyst Aria Naka, who notes that market narratives and participant sentiment consistently lag behind technical structure. As Naka points out, peak confidence typically arrives after the price has already changed, making news headlines an unreliable guide during periods of volatility compression.
"The current situation is interesting because the market is once again approaching a critical psychological zone. Sustained holding above the recent resistance zone could confirm the formation of a higher low and reopen the path toward previous significant highs. Conversely, a failure to hold the recovery zone would expose deeper support and potentially reset sentiment," Naka explained in a post on X.
At the time of writing (12:45 PM Eastern Standard Time), Bitcoin was holding in the $79,000 range and appeared poised for another rise.
