Monero Breaks Into Top 15 Amid Privacy Coin Revival


Monero (XMR), the flagship privacy coin, has officially decoupled from the broader cryptocurrency market.


According to the most recent CoinGecko data, it has now entered the top 15 cryptocurrencies by market cap.


The privacy coin has pulled a truly incredible breakout that has sent its price vertical. It has shattered its 2018 all-time high. It has surged past $640 to enter "price discovery" mode.


The XMR token is up 13.2% against BTC in the last 24 hours alone.


The enormous breakout


XMR's daily chart shows that the most critical technical development was the clearing of the $542 resistance level.


This level marked the absolute peak of the 2018 bull run. For eight years, it acted as an impenetrable ceiling.


XMR ended up incinerating this level. The massive green candles from Jan. 11–13 show no hesitation, with the bulls pushing straight to $650.


This was essentially a "blue sky breakout." There were no sellers left above $542, so there was no resistance to cap the upside. This made it possible for the asset to surge sharply higher.


The rally came following the collapse of Zcash (ZEC) earlier this week.


Following the resignation of the entire Electric Coin Company (ECC) team, retail capital has fled Zcash.


That capital is now likely rotating specifically into Monero. XMR is now absorbing the "privacy premium" of the 2026 market.


However, as reported by U.Today, a massive trader recently went long on ZEC following the plunge.

This volatility suggests that the initial capital was not necessarily part of a long-term "buy and hold" strategy, but rather tactical arbitrage or post-holiday profit-taking. It highlights a burgeoning reality: spot ETFs, while vital for accessibility, do not yet provide an unbreakable floor for Bitcoin’s price.

Quality Over Narrative: The Great Repricing

Beyond Bitcoin, a more profound transformation is occurring in the broader crypto ecosystem. Institutional investors are shifting their focus from speculative "narratives" to fundamental "utility." Lead analysts suggest we are entering a phase of "qualitative correction." Last year, DeFi and smart contract tokens saw average devaluations of over 60%, a move that many experts view as a necessary purging of low-value projects.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will publish December's Consumer Price Index
(CPI) report on Tuesday at 13:30 GMT. The report is expected to show that prices remained broadly stable in the last month of
2025. As always, it's a key read on inflation and could stir some short-term moves in the US Dollar (USD).
That said, it's unlikely to shift the bigger picture for the Federal Reserve (Fed) just yet.
With policymakers still focused primarily on the health of the domestic labour market, the data would probably need to deliver a real surprise to trigger any rethink on monetary policy.
What to Expect in the Next CPl Data Report?
Inflation itself isn't expected to spring many surprises. Headline CPl is seen rising 2.7% YoY in December, unchanged from the previous month. Strip out the more volatile food and energy components, and the picture is much the same: core inflation is forecast to edge up slightly to 2.7% from 2.6%, still uncomfortably above the Fed's target.
On a monthly basis, both headline and core CPI are expected to come in at a fairly steady 0.3%, reinforcing the idea of inflation that's easing only slowly rather than rolling over.
That also helps explain why December's rate cut was never a slam dunk. The Minutes released on December 30 show a deeply split Committee, with several officials saying the call was finely balanced and that leaving rates unchanged was a very real alternative.
Previewing the report, analysts at TD
Securities noted,
"Following the impact from the government shutdown, we now anticipate the core segment to peak at 3% in Q2. We remain of the view that gradual disinflation will be the story in H2 2026. We expect core CPI inflation to end the year at 2.6%."
