Node-ipc supply chain attack targets crypto devs

Three poisoned versions of node-ipc went live on the npm registry on May 14, according to SlowMist. Attackers hijacked a dormant maintainer account and pushed code designed to siphon developer credentials, private keys, exchange API secrets, the works, straight out of .env files.

node-ipc is a popular Node.js package that lets different programs talk to each other on the same machine, or sometimes across a network.

SlowMist catches the breach

Blockchain security firm, SlowMist, spotted the breach through their MistEye threat intel system.

A 34-year-old mainland Chinese man was arrested inside a McDonald’s after police found a lighter and flammable liquid on him.

Authorities say the man had planned to set himself on fire in the public space after experiencing cryptocurrency investment losses of 500,000 yuan (approximately $76,000).

A 34-year-old mainland Chinese man, surnamed Li, invested in a cryptocurrency trading platform between February and May 2026. After losing the equivalent of roughly $76,000, he filed repeated complaints on the platform itself.

Li arrived in Hong Kong on May 13. The following morning, the platform’s staff noticed that he disclosed his travel itinerary through some posts and expressed intent to take his own life. The platform contacted Hong Kong’s Cybersecurity and Technology Crime Bureau, which tracked Li to a McDonald’s in Admiralty.

Officers recovered two containers of flammable liquid and determined he had planned to eat lunch at the McDonald’s before walking to nearby Hong Kong Park to carry out the act.

Since no one was injured and no evacuation was required, Li was arrested on suspicion of possessing items with intent to destroy or damage property. Hong Kong Island’s Regional Crime Unit is handling the case.

Cryptopolitan reported the death of a 32-year-old investor, who lost roughly $1.2 million, earlier this year. The Hong Kong postgraduate student identified as Chen jumped from his family’s apartment after admitting to his father that he had lost approximately HK$10 million ($1.2 million) in failed crypto trades.

Chen had just returned from studies in the United Kingdom for a medical evaluation when the incident occurred.

More than 80 online investment fraud cases were reported in a single week in late April this year. The combined losses exceeded HK$80 million ($10.2 million).

Investors are paying for amplified upside in the sectors that led the post-2020 bull market, and Bitcoin has traded as an extension of that same AI/tech/liquidity complex.

When demand for leveraged equity is this concentrated in growth and technology, speculative capital typically spills into high-beta assets, and Bitcoin still qualifies as one.

Yet, leveraged ETF products target 2x or 3x daily returns, which means AUM growth amplifies momentum in both directions. The $45 billion added since March represents a 34% surge in a market already known for sharp reversals, and the risk appetite embedded in those flows is only as durable as the macro conditions that sustain it.

The price action is frustrating — buyers keep arriving but cannot sustain the momentum needed to break through — and CryptoQuant data has surfaced a signal in the staking figures that reframes what the current consolidation is actually building on.

The total amount of Ethereum locked in staking contracts has reached approximately 39 million ETH — a figure that has increased sharply since the beginning of 2026 and represents the largest sustained commitment of ETH to the network’s validator infrastructure in the asset’s history. Nearly a third of Ethereum’s entire circulating supply is now locked in staking positions, held by participants who have made a deliberate, structural decision to commit their assets to the network rather than keep them available for immediate trading or sale.

The supply implication of that commitment is direct and consequential. Thirty-nine million ETH staked means thirty-nine million ETH that cannot be instantly sold. It means the liquid float available to the market — the ETH that can actually change hands in response to price movements — is significantly smaller than the total supply figures suggest.

That structural reduction in available supply is the foundation beneath Ethereum’s current consolidation. Understanding it fully requires examining what the staking data is also beginning to warn about.
