Vulnerability in MediaTek Chip Poses Risk to Crypto Wallets

A widely used chip in smartphones, including the Solana Seeker, has a critical vulnerability that could let attackers take full control and steal private keys, as reported by Ledger, a crypto wallet manufacturer. Ledger's security team tested the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 (MT6878) and found they could bypass its security, gaining complete access to the device. The attack was executed using electromagnetic pulses during the chip's boot process. Since many crypto wallets rely on private keys stored on smartphones, this flaw poses a significant risk. Ledger's engineers emphasized that there is no secure way to store private keys on these devices due to the vulnerability being embedded in the chip's silicon, making software fixes impossible. Although the likelihood of a successful attack is low (0.1% to 1%), the speed of execution means attackers could gain access within minutes. MediaTek stated that such electromagnetic attacks are beyond the intended use of the MT6878 chip, which is designed for consumer products, not financial applications.
