Antiabortion Group Used Cellphone Data to Target Ads to Planned Parenthood Visitors

An anti-abortion group in the Midwest used cellphone location data to target online content to visitors of certain Planned Parenthood clinics, according to The Wall Street Journal. The Veritas Society, a nonprofit fund established by Wisconsin Right to Life, used precise geolocation data from November 2019 through late last year to direct ads at women it suspected of seeking abortions. The campaign used geofencing technology and extracted unique device identifiers of phones carried into Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers. Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat all said the ads violated their policies and would be rejected in future campaigns.
