Ripple’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brad Garlinghouse has outlined XRP’s irreplaceable role within the crypto company. In a recent discussion, the crypto executive talked about how XRP is driving adoption and growth across Ripple’s ecosystem, highlighting its importance and utility in payments, treasury, custody, infrastructure, and other key areas of the business.

XRP Powers Ripple’s Products And Institutional Growth
Garlinghouse recently appeared on X’s Spaces to discuss the significance of XRP for Ripple and to reaffirm its role in the company’s long-term strategy. The CEO stated that he wanted everyone in the XRP army and the community to know that XRP is the “North Star” guiding Ripple’s mission and day-to-day operations.

According to him, the cryptocurrency is central to everything the firm does, including payment solutions, treasury management, custody, USD, and institutional engagement. Over the years, the firm has continued to develop its payment solutions, using XRP to enable faster, more efficient international transfers while also supporting corporate payment risk management and DEX transactions.

Treasury management further leverages XRP alongside Ripple’s USD stablecoin, RLUSD, to provide liquidity. The crypto company has also recently strengthened its institutional custodian platform, Ripple Custody, through new partnerships with Securosys and Figment, to securely store and manage XRP for banks and asset managers.

Garlinghouse emphasized that XRP is not just a digital asset but a foundational element that, when combined with the XRP Ledger (XRPL), drives utility, trust, velocity, and liquidity within the ecosystem. He made it clear that XRP underpins both current projects and future initiatives.

Bitcoin is approaching a rare four-month decline streak: the market hasn't seen anything like it since 2018.

Renewed macroeconomic uncertainty due to another US government shutdown and the resulting impasse regarding progress on the CLARITY Act has undermined Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market as a whole. Much of the momentum we saw in the first two weeks of the year has now been lost.

In addition to this reset, Bitcoin is teetering on the brink of writing an unpleasant chapter in its history. For the first time since 2018, Bitcoin is close to a fourth consecutive month of declines. As the end of the month approaches, traders are targeting the $87,800 mark for BTC, as a close below this level would effectively confirm this outcome.

A rare historical pattern is emerging.

Corrections or drawdowns are not uncommon in Bitcoin bull markets.  In fact, if we look at history, the current correction of approximately 30% from the highs set in October of last year is well within the range of past bull cycle corrections. We've even seen steeper corrections, such as in the 2021 bull cycle, before the uptrend eventually resumed.
However, it's noteworthy how rarely Bitcoin has seen four consecutive monthly red candles. Notably, the last time this happened was in 2018, when Bitcoin didn't break its streak of red months with a fourth. Instead, Bitcoin continued to decline by approximately 20% with two more red months. A similar situation was observed in 2015, when losses ultimately approached 60% after a four-month red streak.
The takeaway here isn't that history should repeat itself, but that risk asymmetry increases around these inflection points.  A fourth monthly red candlestick, followed by confirmations such as steeper downward momentum, low volume, and on-chain selling pressure, will ultimately challenge the bullish thesis.

Nine weeks in the making, the Bitcoin bear flag may now have broken down, and Bitcoin could be on the way to $70,000 or perhaps even lower. Is there any hope left, or is the bear market about to clamp its icy tendrils around the crypto sector?

A plunge out of the bear flag (purple lines) and down to $86,000 could be the beginning of the next leg down for the $BTC price. There was a bounce from $86,000, but the chances are that this might only take the price back to the bottom of the bear flag in order to confirm the breakdown.

As can be seen in the short-term chart above, the price fell out of a small bear pennant, and once it had broken down through $88,000, downward acceleration rapidly took the price to the $86,000 local bottom.

U.S. central bank researchers are calling for cryptocurrencies to be treated as a separate asset class in derivatives markets, arguing that digital assets carry risks that do not fit neatly into existing financial categories.

In a paper updated on Feb. 12, analysts examined how crypto-related risks are handled in over-the-counter derivatives. The study, titled “Initial Margin for Crypto Currencies Risks in Uncleared Markets,” focuses on how margin requirements are calculated under the framework used by the International Swaps and Derivatives Association.

Why crypto needs its own category

The researchers argue that the behavior of cryptocurrencies differs greatly from that of traditional assets like stocks, commodities, and foreign exchange. Market stress tends to show up more abruptly, prices move more quickly, and swings are bigger. These features make it harder to measure risk using existing models.

Because of this, the paper suggests creating a separate crypto risk class within the current margin system. The proposal suggests sorting digital assets into two broad categories.

The first would include pegged cryptocurrencies, such as stablecoins designed to mirror the value of traditional currencies. The second would cover floating cryptocurrencies, whose prices are determined entirely by market supply and demand.
