Crypto Lost Half Its Developers to AI — But Those Who Stayed Are Building More Than Ever

Crypto development activity has contracted sharply over the past 12 months as thousands of programmers moved toward artificial intelligence projects.

GitHub data shows weekly commits and the number of active developers falling significantly during that period.

Despite the decline, the engineers who remain in the crypto ecosystem are more experienced and focused on building critical infrastructure, including wallets, security layers, and core blockchain tools supporting long-term network growth.

The crypto industry has seen a notable shift in its developer base during the past year. As artificial intelligence projects gained momentum, many programmers redirected their attention to the expanding AI sector. However, blockchain development has not disappeared. Instead, the ecosystem has become smaller and more concentrated around experienced contributors.

Recent GitHub data shows weekly crypto code commits dropping from around 850,000 in early 2025 to roughly 210,000 today. At the same time, the number of active developers declined from about 8,700 to nearly 4,600. Much of that talent did not leave software development entirely. Many programmers redirected their work toward artificial intelligence repositories and research projects.

Crypto Developers Consolidate Around Core Infrastructure

The decline has not affected every blockchain ecosystem equally. BNB Chain recorded one of the steepest drops in commit volume, while Aptos and Base also saw notable decreases in active developers. Solana’s developer base contracted, despite continued growth in network activity.

Robert Mitchnick, Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock, the world’s largest asset management company, made exclusive statements about the company’s new staking-backed Ethereum ETF (ETHB). Mitchnick stated that this new product is a “golden key” for institutional investors.

Mitchnick, highlighting the fundamental differences between Bitcoin and Ethereum, stated that Bitcoin is positioned as “digital gold” and an alternative currency, while Ethereum is a technology-focused investment based on blockchain innovation. He noted that ETHB offers investors the opportunity to share not only in price increases but also in the economic functioning of the network (staking).

Mitchnick, noting that the launch of Bitcoin ETFs (IBITs) has provided a great convenience for investors, said, “An Ethereum ETF with added staking features becomes a clear solution that allows investors to access Ethereum in the easiest and most cost-effective way.”

Mitchnick noted that despite the volatility in the crypto markets, ETF investors have a long-term perspective, pointing out that even when the Bitcoin price fell by nearly 50% from its peak, inflows into IBIT (BlackRock Bitcoin ETF) remained positive. According to 2025 data, IBIT was the only fund among the top 20 most injected ETFs worldwide that appeared on the list despite negative returns.

Mitchnick stated that approximately 90% of ETF investors consist of financial advisors, individual investors, and institutional funds, and that this group tends to accumulate by “buying at the dip.” He added that the remaining 10% are generally hedge funds that arbitrage with futures contracts.
