Since breaking past the $70,000 price mark over the weekend, Bitcoin has been on an upward trajectory in recent days. Amid this renewed upward momentum, a subtle yet significant shift is taking place in Bitcoin’s market structure, which is crucial in determining its next direction.

Whale vs. Retail Activity in Bitcoin and Altcoins Diverge
While Bitcoin’s price may be showing bullish momentum as it remains above the $70,000 threshold, a key metric suggests underlying weakness in its market structure. A recent report from Alphractal, an advanced investment and on-chain data analytics platform, reveals that the gap between whale and retail activity has narrowed to levels now lower than those observed in major altcoins.

Historically, Bitcoin has exhibited a more pronounced gap between large holders and smaller users, a phenomenon often indicative of institutional influence. However, the chart suggests a more balanced participation dynamic, even as altcoins continue to display a more pronounced disparity between major players and individual traders.

According to Alphractal, this narrowing of the metric relative to altcoins suggests that large investors or whales are more inclined to close their long positions or open more short positions on BTC compared to altcoins. At the same time, retail investors appear to be moving in the opposite direction, showing heightened interest in long positions on BTC.

Alphractal noted that this divergence is likely driven by investors’ belief that the flagship asset still has more downside potential, while many altcoins have already experienced a significant decline. As a result, it may not make as much sense from the whales’ perspective to continue heavily shorting altcoins. However, this remains the case for Bitcoin.

Crypto pundit Cool Breeze has drawn attention to a Bank of International Settlements (BIS) report that praised XRP holders as being more educated than Bitcoiners. The report also highlighted these XRP holders as being wealthier than the average crypto holders.

XRP Holders Said To Be More Educated Than Bitcoiners
In an X post, Cool Breeze highlighted the BIS report, which claimed that XRP holders were more educated than Bitcoiners. Specifically, the report ranked XRP and Ethereum as the most educated among crypto holders. In contrast, LTC holders were said to be the least educated, with Bitcoin owners ranking in the middle.

Furthermore, the report noted that crypto holders have higher-than-average household incomes, with Ethereum, Stellar, and XRP holders said to be the wealthiest. It is worth noting that this report was released in 2021, and so, the research findings may be different this time around. The report suggested that long-term crypto ownership played a key role in reaching some of these findings.

The BIS report estimated that owning a crypto in one year increases the probability, on average, of owning a crypto in the following year by 50%. Notably, XRP holders, famously known as the ‘XRP Army,’ have gained a reputation for their long-term belief in the altcoin. These crypto holders held their tokens even during the SEC’s multi-year lawsuit against Ripple, which negatively impacted the XRP price.

Pro-XRP lawyer John Deaton had notably praised these XRP holders for playing a key role in Ripple’s case against the SEC. These holders, alongside Deaton, had filed an amicus brief in which they provided the court with information in favour of Ripple explaining why XRP wasn’t a security, as the SEC alleged. The court eventually ruled that XRP wasn’t a security.

Despite the remarkable Bitcoin recovery to $75K and resilience during the West Asia crisis, its mid-term outlook was still uncertain.

According to crypto options analytics firm Amberdata, the current rebound was sitting on a structurally weaker liquidity compared to pre-October levels.

As such, the market was fragile and prone to outsized moves (liquidation cascades), especially downward if selling pressure reappears.

Bitcoin’s downside risk lurks

The firm cited order book liquidity, which tracks market maker orders or the ability to execute trades without massive slippages or moving the price.

When orderbook liquidity is thin (market makers become cautious), even small orders can move the price alot. But thick liquidity helps absorb the flows effortlessly.

Per the attached chart, BTC’s rally from May to October 2025 saw liquidity rise from $21M to a peak of $45M (thick liquidity).

During the October crash, liquidity dropped 46% within hours, from $48M to $26M, as market makers withdrew during the liquidation cascade. This further intensified the sharp plunge from $122K to below $100K.

Now, the recent recovery has seen orderbook liquidity climb above $30M.

According to Amberdata, a sustained BTC price recovery would require a liquidity reading of $35M or above $40M to underscore renewed market maker confidence and pre-October crash conditions.

Otherwise, the firm warned,

Watch for depth declining while price remains stable – this divergence preceded October’s collapse. Depth below $25M (10bps) combined with rising volume would signal elevated cascade risk.

The firm added that liquidity has seen gradual improvement, but “full recovery is unlikely in the near term.”
