BlackRock doubles down on bitcoin fund offerings with income-focused filing
BlackRock (BLK) is moving deeper into the cryptocurrency exchange-traded fund (ETF) market with a plan to offer income from bitcoin BTC$87,787.23 exposure.

The world's largest asset manager, with an estimated $12.5 trillion in assets under management, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) a Form S-1 to list the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF.

The proposed fund would actively manage exposure to bitcoin, either directly or through shares of BlackRock’s existing iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), while generating income by selling call options on that exposure.

This “covered-call” approach is already common in stock-based income funds, and some fund managers have already applied it to the crypto market. Through a covered-call strategy, the fund would generate income by selling a counterparty the right to purchase its underlying at a fixed price.

The fund, which doesn’t yet have a ticker or fee defined, would actively manage this covered-call strategy and would distribute the generated premiums to investors as income. The tradeoff here is it effectively trades potential upside for income.

Funds with similar strategies to generate income from options include the Roundhill Bitcoin Covered Call Strategy ETF (YBTC), Amplify Bitcoin Max Income Covered Call ETF (BAGY), and the NEOS Bitcoin High Income ETF (BTCI).

Still, BlackRock’s entry stands out for its scale and ties to IBIT, already the dominant spot bitcoin ETF with over $69.7 billion in assets according to SoSoValue data. IBIT and other bitcoin funds offered by BlackRock have been so successful they have become the firm’s top revenue source.

Some covered-call ETFs tend to dilute net asset value (NAV) as they offer higher yields to investors, partly through the return of capital. YBTC, for example, currently shows it has a 35.87% distribution rate, while BTCI shows its distribution rate is at 27.25%. BAGY’s distribut

However, Matrixport claims its proprietary Greed & Fear Index suggests that potential durable bottoms form when the 21-day moving average drops below zero and reverses higher. This transition signals that selling pressure is waning and market conditions are beginning to stabilize.

Matrixport said “While prices could still decline further in the near term, historically these deeply negative sentiment readings have offered highly attractive. Given the cyclical relationship between sentiment and Bitcoin price action.”

BTC price is trading sideways near $68,200, down almost 0.25% over the past 24 hours. The 24-hour high and low are $70,067 and $67,301, respectively.  Trading volume remains low as traders caution ahead of US-Iran talks.

It’s still unclear whether Bitcoin has bottomed out. But mixed sentiment has extended into the new week, driven by different market headlines. 

Here’s a recap of key updates shaping the market in the third week of February. 

Is Bitcoin eyeing ‘stabilization’ or more downside risk?

After renewed strength and a retest of $70K over the weekend, Bitcoin [BTC] has given some of those gains back.

It dropped to a low of $67.2K during the intraday trading session on the 16th of February and was barely holding $68K level at the time of writing. 

The brief reset has deflated the optimism around the previous market recovery, dragging the broader crypto sentiment back to “extreme fear”. 

According to Bitfinex analysts, however, this was part of broader price “stabilization,” citing constructive macro landscape and derivatives market positioning.

The analysts added, 

“Derivatives positioning supports the view that the recent bounce is a stabilisation phase rather than a leverage-driven squeeze. Funding rates have also normalised.”

The analysts highlighted that Options positioning was also somewhat neutral, and over 18,400 BTC was moved off exchanges last week. They concluded, 

“This repricing suggests that traders are no longer aggressively hedging tail risk, but neither are they aggressively re-leveraging.”

Bitfinex expects the price to remain range-bound between $55K-$78.2K before BTC enters a new market bull run.

Institutional interest diverges across crypto ETPs

That said, crypto ETPs saw $173 million Cumulative Outflows last week, marking the fourth week of distribution. 

Over the 4-week period, nearly $4 billion has been distributed by the crypto ETPs, led by Bitcoin and Ethereum

$XRP may be approaching a significant technical moment after returning to an important level on the $XRP/$BTC chart. A crypto analyst known as Austin recently highlighted that the last time $XRP broke above a specific resistance against Bitcoin, the result was a rapid and powerful price expansion. That same level is now being tested again, and it is worth keeping a close watch on how $XRP moves from here.


$XRP/$BTC Breakout Level Returns


Technical analysis of $XRP’s price action against $BTC shows that the important signal lies in $XRP’s performance against Bitcoin, specifically the 0.00002168 level on the $XRP/$BTC chart. This level is interesting because the last time the $XRP/$BTC broke through this zone, the pair surged by roughly 40% within a single week.


However, that move did not happen because Bitcoin’s price was crashing but because $XRP was rallying. As $XRP gained strength against Bitcoin, $XRP/USD followed with an even larger breakout of over 50% within the following week.


The chart accompanying Austin’s post shows a highlighted eight-day move where $XRP gained approximately 52.9%, rising from around the low $2 range to above $3.60. Trading volume rose massively during that period, and this ultimately pushed $XRP to a new all-time high of $3.65.


As it stands, the $XRP/$BTC pair is now trading around this same level, with the most recent daily candlestick printing green, which means that $XRP is outperforming Bitcoin. History shows that when $XRP begins to outperform Bitcoin decisively, it often leads to a broader price expansion. Austin noted that breaking through this level again could be a significant sign of a big move to come.
