Bitcoin is about to log its longest losing streak since 2022 as geopolitical nerves hit risk trades


Bitcoin is on course to print its fifth consecutive weekly loss, which would mark the first such streak since March to May 2022, when bitcoin went down for nine consecutive weeks.As of Thursday Asia time, the largest cryptocurrency by market cap is already down roughly 3% on the week, below $67,000, according to CoinDesk market data, and leaving it vulnerable to another weekly red close.


Macro pressures are adding to the technical weakness. According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. has amassed its largest concentration of air power in the Middle East since the 2003 Iraq invasion. While Washington is reportedly prepared to launch strikes on Iran, President Donald Trump has not made a final decision, with Polymarket bettors giving a 27% chance of strikes occurring by the end of the month.


The geopolitical uncertainty has lifted the dollar index to 97.7, its highest level since Feb. 6, while WTI crude oil has climbed to $65 from Wednesday’s $62 low. A stronger dollar and rising oil prices typically weigh on risk assets, creating additional headwinds for bitcoin, reinforcing a negative weekly close.


Bitcoin has declined by more than 50% from its October all-time high near $126,500 to levels as low as $60,000.


On a monthly basis, bitcoin has recorded five straight declines since October, the second-longest losing streak on record, surpassed only by the six-month slide from 2018 to 2019.


Against gold, bitcoin is down seven consecutive months relative to the precious metal, its longest stretch of underperformance in that pairing.

Societe Generale-FORGE, the digital assets subsidiary of French banking group Societe Generale, announced on Feb. 18 that its euro-backed stablecoin, EUR Coinvertible, has launched on the $XRP Ledger (XRPL), expanding its multi-chain deployment strategy.


“In line with its multi-chain deployment strategy, SG-FORGE is thrilled to announce that EUR Coinvertible is now launched on the $XRP Ledger (the XRPL),” the company stated, adding:


“The launch of EUR Coinvertible on the XRPL is being supported by Ripple’s custody solution.”


It added: “There will also be an opportunity to explore new use cases, including incorporating EUR Coinvertible into Ripple’s products and leveraging it as trading collateral.”


Jean-Marc Stenger, CEO of SG-FORGE, explained: “The successful launch of EUR Coinvertible on the $XRP Ledger is a new step, reinforcing our commitment to offering next-generation, compliant crypto-assets that promote transparency, security, and scalability. While $XRP has continued to witness bearish pressure, it may be on track for a two-digit price target based on historical trends.

Aptos eyes tokenomics overhaul to scale APT deflation


The Aptos Foundation is looking to propose a significant shakeup to the dynamics of the Aptos token, announcing a host of potential policy changes designed to spur greater $APT deflation.


In an X post on Wednesday, the Aptos Foundation said it would submit several governance proposals to help transition the ecosystem away from its current subsidy-based emission format to something focused more on “performance-driven mechanisms” and decreasing $APT supply.


“The Aptos network is transitioning to performance-driven tokenomics designed to align supply mechanics with network utilization,” the Aptos Foundation said, adding:


“This update replaces bootstrap-era subsidy with mechanisms tied to transaction activity, establishing a framework where burns can exceed emissions as high-throughput applications scale.”

One of the foundation’s proposals is to set a hard cap at 2.1 billion tokens, as $APT currently does not have a maximum cap on the total supply. The team said there are currently 1.196 billion $APT in circulation.


Under the current emission structure, new tokens are continuously minted to support the ecosystem by funding things like development, grants, and staking rewards.


Meanwhile, significant token unlocks have been hanging over the ecosystem.


However, the Aptos Foundation said that this specific pressure has been easing and will continue to decline after the next major four-year token unlock cycle ends in October, stating that it will result in a 60% reduction in annualized supply unlocks.


The team said that as the ecosystem has matured to the point where big institutions such as BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and Apollo are now deploying “hundreds of millions onchain,” $APT tokenomics need to become more sustainable.
