Trump’s billion-dollar crypto tangle could freeze market structure reform until 2029

 A sweeping market structure bill meant to clarify U.S. crypto regulation could be shelved until 2027, with implementation delayed to 2029, as Senate talks stall over Trump’s expanding crypto footprint and Democrats’ midterm leverage, according to The Block, citing TD Cowen.

Democrats are pushing to include language that would bar senior government officials—and their immediate families—from owning or operating crypto businesses while in office.

That provision would directly implicate President Donald Trump and his family, who have reportedly realized over $1 billion in direct profits from various cryptocurrency ventures since he was sworn in on January 20, 2025.

These ventures include World Liberty Financial (WLFI), a DeFi and stablecoin project that lists Trump and his three sons as co-founders.

The Trump family also holds a stake in bitcoin miner American Bitcoin, and launched the Official Trump ($TRUMP) and MELANIA ($MELANIA) meme coins shortly before Trump took office.

TD Cowen policy analyst Jaret Seiberg said such restrictions would be a “nonstarter” for Trump unless their effective date were pushed far into the future.

One potential way to overcome Trump’s objections is to make the conflict-of-interest provision effective three years after enactment, Seiberg explained.

Pushing it past the next inauguration, means it would never apply to Trump.

The expansion of Maple Finance's DeFi activity into stablecoins, specifically syrupUSDC, drove the rally. The difference in the activity of the native token and its stablecoin showed that the latter was the real driver.
syrupUSDC growth fuels SYRUP activity
Looking at the asset transfer volume, syrupUSDC doubled in only one month, from $2.143 billion to $4.982 billion. This was massive growth, bearing in mind that the expansion happened in late January 2026, as noted earlier.
While the trading volume of the syrupUSDC token doubled, the trading volume of the native SYRUP token declined by 33%, according to Token Terminal. This showed that participants preferred SYRUP's USDC stablecoin amid a general bearish crypto market.
Moreover, active loans on SYRUP grew by 8.4% to around $2.4 billion, with 70% coming from the stablecoin. However, it is those through syrupUSDC that drove the growth, as they jumped 30.5% to around $1.7 billion.
Additionally, the number of holders of the stablecoin grew by 4.8%, reaching 6.9K in just a month of launch. Those sending syrupUSDC daily also increased by 17% to around 4,420. This data showed that the stablecoin was gaining traction among crypto users.
The Total Value Locked (TVL) also grew by 21%, reaching $3.2 billion.
All this spike in activity at syrupUSDC had a ripple effect on the entire chain as fees and revenue grew. Both monthly fees and revenue rose by more than 55%, reaching $10 million and $1.1 million, respectively.
Since the syrupUSDC is pegged to the U.S. dollar, it's the native token that benefited from this liquidity.

The divergence in these metrics leads to a compelling short-term prediction: Ethereum is positioned for a potential breakout or a more sustained rally compared to its peers. Historically, when MVRV ratios are low, the risk of a mass sell-off decreases, as investors are less likely to exit at a loss.
Market analysts suggest that if Ethereum can maintain its momentum above the $2,000 support level, its undervalued status could trigger a "catch-up" rally, potentially outperforming Bitcoin in the coming weeks as capital rotates into the lagging altcoin leader. For now, the data suggests that while Bitcoin is cooling off, Ethereum’s "buy the dip" window remains open.
