Smart money is hedging bitcoin more aggressively than ether :Crypto Daybook Americas

As the new quarter gets underway, the crypto market is sending a subtle but important signal: traders seem a bit more cautious about bitcoin than ether ($ETH).

You can see this in the options market, where more experienced traders and institutions go to hedge risk or generate extra returns. Think of options as a kind of insurance. Traders can buy protection against price drops (puts) or bet on price increases (calls), depending on their outlook.

Right now, one key metric, called a risk reversal, is negative for both bitcoin and ether across different time frames. In simple terms, that means puts, or downside protection, is more expensive than bullish bets. When traders are willing to pay more for put options, it usually signals lingering fears of a price drop. That's perfectly normal, considering the brutal downtrend in bitcoin and ether since October.

But here’s where it gets interesting: that caution is stronger for bitcoin. Put options on bitcoin are more expensive than those on ether across all time frames, suggesting traders are more worried about $BTC’s downside risk.

The difference becomes even clearer when zooming further out. Longer-dated ether options, such as those expiring next March, are only slightly bearish, while bitcoin’s equivalent options carry a much steeper premium for downside protection.

In short, the market is betting that ether will be relatively resilient. That would signal a bullish trend change in the ether-to-bitcoin ratio, which has been in a downtrend since August (see the technical analysis section).

Bitcoin Finally Scores Green Monthly Candle

Bitcoin, the leading cryptocurrency by market cap, has now scored a month in the green, breaking a long streak of red candles on the monthly chart.

The bulls managed to eke out a very modest 1.84% during March, which ended up being a rather volatile month.

The leading cryptocurrency was seemingly on the cusp of ending its severe downtrend in mid-March. On March 15, it reached a multi-week high of $76,013, and the bulls started eyeing the much-coveted $80,000 level. However, the momentum ended up fading relatively fast, and the cryptocurrency ended up dropping below $65,000 by the end of March.

Will the downtrend end?

The bears gained firm control of the momentum when "Uptober" ended up being a massive failure. Bitcoin did reach its current all-time high of $126,080 during that month, but it then started violently crashing.

The sell-off accelerated in November. The bulls started capitulating, with the $BTC price breaking through major psychological support levels.

The year ended on a bleak note with another red candle, and the new year brought no relief.

February was a truly brutal month with a massive red candle with a long lower wick. The price capitulated all the way down to test the $60,000 support, which so far remains the bottom of the current correction.

After grueling five consecutive months of red closures, March finally printed a small green body that resembles a doji or spinning top. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the ball is finally in the bulls' court, given that the flagship cryptocurrency is still on rather shaky ground.

On Apr. 1, exactly 1 billion $XRP (valued at roughly $1.34 billion) was released from Ripple’s cryptographic escrow accounts.

The most recent unlock has been performed in two separate 500 million $XRP tranches, Whale Alert data shows.

The $XRP supply is deliberately predictable. From the get-go, the company held a massive portion of the total $XRP supply. This created anxiety among investors that Ripple could suddenly flood the market and crash the price.

Ripple found a solution by locking in 55 billion $XRP into a series of cryptographic, smart-contract-based escrows on the $XRP Ledger.

The system is programmed to release exactly 1 billion $XRP on the first day of every month for 55 months (but there can be some deviations from the schedule). This guarantees supply predictability.

There is a common misconception about Ripple immediately dumping all of its 1 billion unlocked tokens onto the open retail market.

Ripple keeps a fraction of the unlocked $XRP to fund its ongoing business operations and to sell directly to its institutional clients. These clients use $XRP for On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) to perform payments.
