The Federal Reserve held rates steady under Kevin Warsh, a move Mena described as fully expected. The larger signal came from updated projections, with the median dot, or midpoint of policymakers’ rate forecasts, now pointing to a possible rate hike later this year.

Inflation running at a three-year high added pressure on the Fed’s stance after an energy spike tied to the Iran conflict. Mena also cited the Bank of Japan’s rate increase to 1%, its highest level since 1995, as another source of pressure on risk assets.

The strategist said:

“Warsh is also a distinctive figure for digital-asset markets: the first Fed Chair with personal ties to the crypto industry (including an early investment in multiple crypto projects) and a more constructive posture toward bitcoin than his predecessors, publicly stating he is a fan of bitcoin.”

The Federal Reserve kept the federal funds rate locked at 3.50%-3.75% Wednesday in a unanimous decision, but it was the updated dot plot that instantly rewired expectations across rate-sensitive markets. According to the original report, nine of 18 FOMC participants now project at least one additional rate hike this year, with six officials penciling in multiple increases. Only one participant sees a cut in 2026. The statement itself was completely rewritten, emerging far shorter than any in recent memory.

For crypto markets, already navigating a tight correlation with tech equities and macro liquidity cycles, that hawkish tilt matters. Higher rates raise the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum. At the same time, they can lift borrowing costs across DeFi lending protocols and pressure stablecoin yields tied to Treasury rates. The immediate takeaway: the Fed doesn’t see its fight against inflation as over, and price pressures are still “elevated relative to its 2% target,” the statement said.

CME Group, the world's largest futures exchange operator, is planning to sue the Commodity Futures Trading Commission over the agency's decision to approve perpetual futures contracts.

Perpetual futures, or perps, are a type of derivatives that don't have an expiration date and allow people to bet on the price movement of assets without owning them directly.

CME CEO Terrence Duffy told on Wednesday that perpetual futures should be classified as swaps under the Dodd-Frank Act, and that this would form the basis of the lawsuit, which the company is filing on Thursday.

Last month, the bitcoin perpetual contracts as futures contracts. It approved Kalshi's application to make such offerings and issued a no-action stance for Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc., for its plans to offer digital commodity derivatives products.

While perps trading has grown popular in recent years, most of the action has been occurring outside of the U.S. due to regulatory ambiguity.
