China continues to crack down hard on illegal Bitcoin mining, handing down tough sentences even as $BTC mining difficulty remains near all-time highs. In a recent case, two men in Heilongjiang Province received a combined 14-year prison term for illicit mining activities.
Heilongjiang Duo Sentenced for Electricity Theft
Authorities said the ringleader, Zhang, and his accomplice, Zhao, illegally tapped into an oilfield’s power grid in September 2024. They used the electricity to run 24 Bitcoin mining machines in an abandoned pigsty, effectively stealing power without paying.
Chinese courts found them guilty of illegal electricity theft and related crypto mining offenses. Zhang, as the main perpetrator, received the longer portion of the sentence. The combined 14-year term reflects China’s zero-tolerance approach and serves as a warning to others considering similar schemes.
Mining Crackdown Intensifies Amid Rising Difficulty
This case is part of a wider crackdown. With Bitcoin mining difficulty hovering near historic highs, authorities are clamping down on corner-cutting and illegal operations. In March, for example, Chinese regulators imposed around $14.5 million in liabilities on a major Xinjiang polysilicon producer for illegally supplying electricity to miners.
As mining becomes more competitive, China’s enforcement shows that attempts to cut costs through illicit means carry severe consequences.

The crypto market is yet to have an altcoin season the likes of what was seen back in 2021, despite the Bitcoin price hitting new all-time highs over the last two years. This has alluded to the fact that the Bitcoin dominance over the market remains very high, thus not leaving any room for altcoins to run. Nevertheless, this has not deterred the expectations of an altcoin season among investors, and many believe that when it finally comes, it will be more explosive than 2021.

Altcoin Market Is Winning Against Bitcoin
Bitcoin has often led the cryptocurrency and by extension, its performance has influenced the advent of altcoin seasons. This is due to the way altcoins measure up to the leading cryptocurrency with each cycle, and this one looks to be prepping for a major rally.

According to analyst Mark Chadwick on X, altcoins are already bringing a major bullish pattern against Bitcoin. This comes as the ALT/BTC chart has marked its fourth consecutive green monthly candle, and this has led to the confirmation of a bullish crossover.

The crypto analyst pointed out that the last time altcoins made such a bullish crossover against Bitcoin was back in 2021. The result of this was the most explosive altcoin season that the crypto market has seen to date, leading altcoins on runs that saw their values rise by many multiples.

In a statement on the 2nd of April, Wallet in Telegram said that users on the privacy-focused messenger can now trade crypto, stocks, metals, and oil with up to 50x leverage.

The wallet has seen strong adoption with over 150 million registered users.

About 25 million of these users are considered active, especially in P2P transfers and fiat on-ramps, making Telegram a key crypto trading terminal. The messenger itself has over 1 billion users.

As such, the integration of Lighter could boost trading volumes on the DEX too. As it stands, this is the primary and largest Lighter integration to date.

For comparison, its rival Hyperliquid runs perps trading for Phantom, Rabby, MetaMask, and others. This fueled Hyperliquid’s initial adoption by sharing fees from trades routed by the apps.

The collaboration comes at a time when the demand for perpetual trading has exploded. At the market peak last October, the overall perp volume reached $350 billion and $25 billion in Open Interest (OI).

Despite the broader crypto rout in the past few months, perp volume still hovered around $150 billion.

However, Lighter’s trading activity has declined significantly. Especially after the LIT’s token debut at the end of last December, which ended the farming period. As a result, traders who were hunting for an airdrop migrated elsewhere to search for new opportunities.

Consequently, Lighter’s trading activity fell sharply after December. This decline has extended into Q1 2026, and there hasn’t been any meaningful recovery in Q2 as the broader crypto market remains subdued.

So far, the weekly perps volumes have fallen from a record $75B in November to about $8B in April—an 89% decline in trading activity.

According to the report, while the Bitcoin price continues to trade sideways, the total stablecoin supply, a key indicator of liquidity in the crypto ecosystem, continues to decline. This suggests a weakening influx of new funds into the market and decreased buying appetite on the spot market. Conversely, the increase in stablecoin reserves on derivatives exchanges is noteworthy.

CryptoQuant analysts note that this imbalance observed in derivatives markets could be a significant signal. Despite open interest data remaining flat, the increase in reserves suggests that investors are preparing for a potential decline by taking short positions or increasing collateral to protect their existing positions. This indicates increased uncertainty regarding the market’s direction.

The analysis also noted that a renewed increase in stablecoin supply is necessary for a healthy upward trend to begin. Otherwise, it warned, sudden and sharp downward volatility could occur due to the influence of derivative markets in an environment of weak underlying liquidity.
