Ackman argued that headline valuations can be misleading. While the S&P 500’s price-to-earnings ratio is currently around 20–21, compared to the historical average of 16–17, the composition of the market has changed significantly. Today’s largest companies are often high-growth, highly profitable leaders rather than slow-growth giants of the past.
He emphasized that this shift means investors are paying for higher-quality earnings growth. In his view, when you factor in innovation and growth rates around 20%, many companies still look reasonably priced.
