Bitcoin rallies 2.3% after Trump calls Iran peace proposal ‘totally unacceptable’
Bitcoin briefly dipped before surging over $82,000 on Sunday as US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s counteroffer to a peace deal, which could prolong tension in the Middle East.
“I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE, Trump said in a post to Truth Social on Sunday after reading Iran’s proposal to end the war. Iran has previously requested that the US pay for war reparations and unfreeze blocked Iranian financial assets.
Bitcoin (BTC) fell from $81,430 to $80,520 within 45 minutes of Trump’s post before whipsawing nearly 2.3% to $82,347 less than three hours later, according to CoinGecko data. Bitcoin’s rise also resulted in nearly $64 million worth of short positions being wiped out over the last four hours, according to Coinglass data.

Renegade Fi's $209K exploit shows operational failures still undermine DeFi security maturity

As trading activity expanded across DeFi markets, Renegade Fi encountered a preventable security failure inside its trading infrastructure. The attacker exploited an unprotected initializer within the Dark Pool proxy contract on Arbitrum and gained privileged delegatecall access.

The attacker then drained nearly 27 ERC-20 assets from the affected contract. Those assets included WBTC, PENDLE, LDO, CRV, RDNT, and SYNTHR, while total losses approached roughly $209,000

That exploit revealed how deployment-level weaknesses still bypass sophisticated infrastructure across modern DeFi systems.

Instead of targeting advanced cryptographic flaws, the attacker exploited a simple setup oversight during proxy initialization.

Meanwhile, Blockaid quickly flagged suspicious activity, while the incident reinforced growing operational fragility across interconnected DeFi environments.

“I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE, Trump said in a post to Truth Social on Sunday after reading Iran’s proposal to end the war. Iran has previously requested that the US pay for war reparations and unfreeze blocked Iranian financial assets.

At Trump’s January 2025 inauguration, the national average sat near $3.05 to $3.20 per gallon. By late 2025 and early 2026, prices had pulled back to a low of around $2.81 in January 2026. Since then, the trajectory has moved in one direction.

March 2026 brought a monthly average of $3.64 per gallon. April climbed to roughly $4.10. By early May, prices had crossed $4.45 to $4.58, depending on the source. The most recent week alone added about 25 cents to the national average. Compared to May 2025, when regular averaged $3.14 to $3.26 per gallon, drivers are now paying more than $1.40 extra at the pump.

The primary driver is the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict. Military activity tied to Strait of Hormuz tensions disrupted an estimated 20% of global oil supply flows. Brent crude crossed $100 per barrel, with WTI trading near $94 to $95. Those crude levels feed directly into retail prices, since oil typically accounts for 50 to 60% of what consumers pay at the pump.
