A7A5 stablecoin aims to evolve beyond sanctions as trade tool

There’s a stablecoin you’ve probably never heard of that has quietly become one of the most geopolitically significant tokens in crypto. A7A5, a ruble-backed stablecoin launched in January 2025, has processed over $100 billion in on-chain transactions in less than a year. And now it says it can thrive even if the sanctions it was designed to circumvent disappear entirely.

That’s a bold claim for a token that just got hit by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, the EU, and the UK in rapid succession. But A7A5’s pitch to Russian businesses has shifted: it’s no longer just about dodging Western restrictions. It’s positioning itself as permanent infrastructure for non-dollar trade settlement.

From sanctions workaround to trade backbone

A7A5 was built to solve a very practical problem: Russian companies couldn’t move money across borders efficiently because most international payment rails run through Western banks that won’t touch sanctioned entities. Issued by Kyrgyzstani firm Old Vector LLC and backed by reserves held at Promsvyazbank, a sanctioned Russian bank, the token gave businesses a way to settle trades in rubles on blockchain rails. Primarily operating on Tron and Ethereum, it found an audience fast.

By late 2025, the stablecoin had become a key settlement medium for Russian trade with China, Southeast Asia, and Iran. Trading volume concentrated heavily against $USDT on the Grinex exchange, creating a ruble-to-dollar-stablecoin corridor that bypassed traditional banking infrastructure entirely.

The sanctions hammer drops

On August 14, 2025, OFAC sanctioned A7A5 and its associated entities, citing facilitation of sanctions evasion and illegal financial activities. The EU followed with its own ban on October 23, 2025. The UK piled on as well.

Brazil’s Federal Police confiscated roughly 71 million Brazilian reais, approximately $14 million, in cryptocurrency tied to criminal activity in 2025. That figure represents a sixfold jump compared to seizures in 2024, signaling that law enforcement is getting more aggressive about chasing digital money trails.

Analytics firm Chainalysis estimates that around 505 billion reais, roughly $100 billion, in crypto value circulated through Brazil in 2025. The seized funds amount to about 0.014% of total transaction volume.

Ethereum Marks Poorest ETF Week Since JanuaryOver the past week, institutional demand for Ethereum appears to have slowed significantly, as no influx of fresh capital was recorded on any day of the week.

Data provided by SosoValue shows that the Ethereum ETFs have recorded a total weekly outflow of $65.65 million, marking the highest weekly withdrawal recorded since January.

Ethereum sees slowed institutional demand
While the last week has proven to be the poorest week the Ethereum ETFs have witnessed since January, the asset saw mixed price action.

This suggests that the brief rally seen on some days of the week might have been driven by market hype or sentiment and not demand from investors, especially institutions.

Nonetheless, the extended withdrawals seen on all days of the week suggest that institutional investors are taking caution and are hesitating to lock their funds in the Ethereum-based investment product.

The highest outflow was seen on Tuesday, May 12, when the funds recorded a total of $130.62 million in outflows within 24 hours, as market sentiment turned negative.

Apparently, it appeared that the brief price rallies witnessed on some of the days could not drive institutional interest in Ethereum, causing the steady withdrawals seen throughout the week.

BlackRock maintains lead
BlackRock has not only established its leadership in the Bitcoin ETF market, but also in the Ethereum ETF ecosystem as ETHA, its Ethereum ETF, accounted for the highest outflow recorded on each day of the week.

Although the broader momentum is weak and no inflow was seen throughout the week, BlackRock still positions itself as a key player in the Ethereum ETF market.
