Market News: Hot April CPI Kills Fed Rate Cut Hopes — Bitcoin Slips as Markets Reprice Higher for Longer

US inflation came in hotter than expected across every major measure in April, reinforcing the case for the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates on hold not just at its June 17 meeting but likely through the remainder of 2026. Bitcoin slipped 1.2% to around $80,600 following the release as Treasury yields climbed, stock futures fell, and markets digested the implications of an inflation print that surprised to the upside on both a monthly and annual basis.

The Consumer Price Index rose 3.8% year-over-year in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics — above economist forecasts of 3.7% and a meaningful acceleration from March's 3.3% reading. On a monthly basis, CPI rose 0.6%, double the expected 0.3% and well above March's 0.2% increase.

Core CPI, which strips out food and energy and is the measure the Federal Reserve watches most closely, also came in above expectations. Monthly core CPI rose 0.4% against forecasts of 0.2% and March's 0.3%. Year-over-year core CPI climbed to 2.8%, above the 2.7% forecast and March's 2.6% reading.

There were no soft spots to find in the report. Headline and core inflation both accelerated month-over-month and beat estimates at every level — a clean upside surprise that leaves the Fed with no data-driven justification to begin cutting rates.

The reaction across asset classes was swift and consistent. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.44% as bond markets priced in a longer period of elevated rates.

UAE government approves crypto for fee payments, taps Crypto.com as first licensed platformThe United Arab Emirates just made crypto useful for something most people actually have to do: pay the government. The Central Bank of the UAE has approved cryptocurrency as an accepted method for government fee payments, making the Gulf state one of the first nations to formally bridge digital assets and public sector transactions.

Crypto.com secured the distinction of being the first virtual asset service provider licensed to facilitate these payments in Dubai. The platform will handle the conversion layer, turning crypto into UAE dirhams before the funds reach government coffers. In English: you pay in Bitcoin or other supported tokens, the government receives dirhams, and nobody has to argue about volatility.

How the payment mechanism works

The structure is designed to insulate the government from the price swings that make treasurers lose sleep. When a resident initiates a fee payment through Crypto.com, the platform converts the digital asset into dirhams via an official mechanism before settlement. The government never touches crypto directly.

One notable wrinkle in the broader regulatory picture: Dubai enacted a ban on privacy tokens on January 12, 2026. So while the doors are opening wider for mainstream digital assets, anonymity-focused coins like Monero remain firmly on the outside looking in.

A Bad Deal Gets Worse

756 million Cronos tokens sit on Trump Media’s books, purchased for close to $114 million as part of a deal with Crypto.com. By March 31, those tokens were valued at just $53 million — less than half what the company paid.

That loss compounded an already bruising quarter driven largely by Bitcoin purchases made near last summer’s market peak. The company bought roughly 9,500 Bitcoin at an average cost of around $108,519 per coin.

At quarter-end, the 9,542 Bitcoin it held carried a cost basis of $1.13 billion but a fair value of only $647 million — a gap of nearly $500 million. Bitcoin has since climbed back above $80,000, pushing the position’s value closer to $770 million.

The total damage for the first quarter of 2026 came to $406 million in net losses, up sharply from $31.7 million during the same period a year earlier.

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, nearly $370 million of that figure came from unrealized losses on digital assets and equity holdings — meaning the company has not sold its positions at a loss, but the decline in market value still hit the books hard. An additional $108 million in investment losses was tied mostly to equity securities.
