Crypto longs lose $500 million as bitcoin slides to $78,000, SOL and XRP down 5%

Crypto bulls betting on higher prices nursed over $500 million in losses as bitcoin slipped to near $78,00 in Asian morning hours Saturday.

$BTC was down 3.2% over 24 hours, per CoinDesk data, reversing all gains from the past seven days where the asset briefly traded above $82,000.

Solana (SOL) dropped 5% to $86.98 and is now down 7% over the past seven days. XRP slid 4.3% to $1.41. Ether ($ETH) lost 3.3% to $2,189, with its weekly decline widening to 5.3%, the worst among the majors. BNB held up better, down 3.9% on the day but still up 1.1% over the past seven days. Sui (SUI) extends losses amid weak retail demandSui is down 10% on Friday, extending its decline for the fifth consecutive day.

The technical outlook for $SUI is bearish, with a risk of a steeper decline toward $1.00.

Sui ($SUI) is down roughly 10% on Friday, continuing a five-day decline this week as retail interest in the token wanes.

The broader market is shifting focus away from underperforming layer-1 assets, and technical indicators suggest a potential double-digit drop toward $1.00.

Weakness in derivatives signals sell-side dominance

$SUI is also losing traction in the derivatives market. According to CoinGlass, $SUI futures Open Interest (OI) fell 10.5% over the past 24 hours to $727.97 million, reflecting a reduced notional value of outstanding contracts.

In the same period, $7.2 million in positions were liquidated, with $7. million coming from long positions—indicating strong sell-side pressure.

Technical outlook: Will $SUI drop below $1?

The $SUI/USD 4H chart is bearish and efficient as Sui is down by 10% in the last 24 hours. At press time, $SUI is trading below the 50-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at $1.1558 and the lower Bollinger Band at $1.1442, showing short-term bearish bias.

The token remains above the 200-period EMA at $1.0270, suggesting that the broader recovery structure is still intact despite waning momentum.

Bitcoin ($BTC) risks starting its “next downtrend” as bulls fail to break beyond $82,000, the latest analysis warns.

Key points:

Bitcoin traders are beginning to sway toward a support retest or even a new "downtrend" for $BTC/USD.

Current price behavior has retained overhead resistance, with bulls unable to push through $82,000.

Rangebound crypto markets spark $330 million in liquidations over 24 hours.

Bitcoin traders are increasingly split on where $BTC/USD will go next, but calls for lower levels are growing.

“For now, price remains in range, within value, rotating just above the very key ‘range high,’” trading account JDK Analysis wrote in its latest updates on X.

As Cointelegraph reported, that rangebound construction, in place through most of May, is bordered by a CME futures gap and a key 200-day trend line to the upside.

With both staying in place for now, market participants are starting to assume that the bottom of the range will be retested instead.

“Now it’s important to watch how price reacts at the support zone we already bounced from once before. In my opinion, we will likely break below it this time,” CGT Trader said.

Trader BitBull went further, seeing the risk of a protracted period of downside $BTC price pressure about to enter.

“$BTC failed to reclaim the $82,000 level again,” they told X followers on Friday.

Trading circles are not without their more optimistic takes.Cryptic Trades predicts that $BTC/USD will follow in the footsteps of US stock markets, which continue to post new all-time highs.

“$BTC is going to play a massive catch-up in the upcoming weeks,” it summarized.

Examining the Bollinger Bands volatility indicator, meanwhile, trader Cai Soren said that bulls “stepped in instantly” to defend support.

As consumer prices in the US continue to climb, questions are mounting about what that means for BTC and whether the world’s largest cryptocurrency can hold its ground. This change also creates a new and challenging environment for the broader crypto market, especially as Bitcoin’s price action often responds sharply to shifting macroeconomic conditions.

Bitcoin Holds Ground Amid Rising US Inflation
Data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 3.8% annually this April. This measurement marks the highest inflation level since May 2023. 

Typically, rising inflation forces the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates high. This higher rate makes risk assets like Bitcoin less attractive compared to safer yields from bonds. However, despite the surge in inflation, the price of Bitcoin only dipped about 1-1.5% to around $80,500 before stabilizing at the $81,000 range. The cryptocurrency’s 24-hour price change also remained relatively flat at 0.1%.

The inflation increase came from an energy price shock linked to the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran. This caused monthly inflation to rise by 0.6%, which matched what many economists predicted. The annual numbers also overshot the initial 3.7% market forecasts. Notably, before the military strikes on Iran in late February, the annual inflation rate was much lower, at 2.4%.

In response, the 10-year US Treasury yield climbed more than 4 basis points to 4.459%. Meanwhile, US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a combined daily outflow of over $233 million on May 12, showing that investors are moving away from BTC.
