Coinbase CEO says US government could hold over $1T in Bitcoin reserves

Brian Armstrong thinks the US government is sitting on a future trillion-dollar Bitcoin pile. The Coinbase CEO has been making the case that America’s existing Bitcoin holdings, combined with proposed federal purchases, could push the nation’s reserves past the $1 trillion mark.

The US federal government is already the largest known state holder of Bitcoin, with an estimated 328,372 $BTC as of February 2026.

From seized coins to strategic asset

Here’s the thing about the government’s Bitcoin: most of it wasn’t bought. It was seized. Think Silk Road busts, ransomware takedowns, and various federal forfeiture actions. For years, the standard playbook was to auction that Bitcoin off as quickly as possible.

That changed in March 2025, when President Trump signed an executive order establishing a US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The order directed the government to stop selling its forfeited Bitcoin and instead consolidate it into a permanent reserve.

The BITCOIN Act and the path to 1 million $BTC

Armstrong’s trillion-dollar projection doesn’t rely solely on what the government already owns. It leans heavily on Senator Cynthia Lummis’s proposed legislation, known as the BITCOIN Act.

Lummis first introduced the bill on July 31, 2024, proposing that the US purchase 1 million $BTC over five years. She re-introduced it on March 11, 2025, this time with co-sponsorship from five senators. The bill envisions funding those purchases through diversification of existing federal funds, not new spending.

The G20 domino effect

Armstrong claims other G20 nations are now examining Bitcoin reserves following America’s announcement.

The immediate market implication is straightforward: if the US government becomes a consistent buyer of Bitcoin rather than a periodic seller, that removes a significant source of sell press

Here’s a fun tension inside Solana’s leadership: the Foundation’s president thinks meme coins are useful stress tests for the network. The co-founder thinks they’re garbage. Both of them work on the same blockchain.

Lily Liu, president of the Solana Foundation, said during a discussion with Fundstrat’s Sean Farrell that meme coins should be understood as a “production test” for the network’s performance, not as a defining feature of the ecosystem. In her framing, every degen-fueled trading frenzy is actually a live fire drill for Solana’s infrastructure.

The reframe Solana needed

Liu described meme coins as part of a broader spectrum of assets on Solana, ranging from pure speculation on one end to genuine utility on the other. She’s not endorsing meme coins as valuable financial products. She’s saying they serve a mechanical purpose for the network, even if the tokens themselves are economically hollow.

Meme coins accounted for roughly 62% of Solana’s dApp revenue in June 2025. That’s a staggering concentration in assets that, by design, have no fundamental value proposition beyond vibes and momentum.

Rather than deny that reality, Liu is leaning into it with a different narrative. The meme coins aren’t the product. Solana’s ability to process them at scale is the product.

Bitcoin ($BTC) may be nearing a major turning point after a historical halving-cycle signal resurfaced, raising the risk of a sharp market correction.

According to an analysis by TradingShot shared in a TradingView post on May 15, Bitcoin has now completed 760 days since its April 2024 halving event, a timeframe that has historically coincided with major market downturns.

Previous cycles show that once $BTC reached the 760-day mark after a halving, the asset experienced an immediate decline that eventually led to a broader bear market phase.

Similar patterns emerged after the 2012, 2016, and 2020 halving cycles, with Bitcoin forming a market top before entering steep corrections shortly after the 760-day signal appeared.

Those declines later evolved into a “bottom process,” where the market established a long-term base before starting a new bullish cycle.

The analysis also highlighted Bitcoin’s relationship with the 0.618 Fibonacci time level between halving cycles.

Historically, the 760-day signal has appeared before this key timing level, except in 2014 when it aligned exactly with it.

For the current cycle, the 0.618 Fibonacci level is projected around October 2026, a period that could coincide with a broader bear market phase and potentially mark Bitcoin’s next major cycle bottom.

The chart pattern further suggests Bitcoin may already be shifting from a topping phase into the early stages of a correction, with a projected curved path pointing to a possible decline before a longer-term recovery begins.

Bitcoin network is showing increased strength

Interestingly, this outlook comes as Bitcoin’s on-chain activity shows renewed strength, a trend that has historically aligned with the end of local bottoms and the return of stronger market conditions.
