Solana Triples Its Transaction Processing Capacity. What's Next?
Solana has deployed a significant upgrade, "Transaction V1" (txv1), to its mainnet, testnet, and devnet. This update triples the network's transaction capacity by increasing the maximum serialized transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes. The change allows developers to include more instructions and data within a single atomic transaction, a key advantage for complex operations in DeFi, tokenized assets, and payment solutions. Previously, developers had to break operations into multiple transactions or use bundles, which lacked the same atomic guarantees.
Key changes in V1 include moving computational resource limits and priority fees into transaction settings for easier infrastructure access and removing Address Lookup Tables (ALTs). While removing ALTs simplifies transactions, it increases their size as accounts are now included directly. Analysis shows over 62% of legacy v0 transactions used at least one ALT.
The upgrade arrives as Solana sees significant growth, with nearly $8 billion in Total Value Locked (TVL) and over $4 billion in real-world assets on the network. However, analysts note that broader adoption and increased transaction activity do not automatically follow technical improvements.
Operators, including RPC providers, indexers, validators, and wallet providers, must update their systems to support the new transaction format. Specific actions include updating software versions and correctly parsing the new V1 structure.
