On August 19, FalconX transferred 198,750 Gate $HYPE tokens, worth approximately $14 million, prompting blockchain analysis firm Onchain Lens to suggest this signals a likely sale.
A single large deposit to an exchange might mean nothing by itself. However, it appears that many institutional investors are reducing their exposure to $HYPE tokens, which is attracting attention.
A more important question is who controls the cryptocurrency markets now. $HYPE has become one of the top 10 tokens, and the significance of institutional investors and OTC market participants is growing. When many of these market participants simultaneously send coins to exchanges, the signal goes beyond Hyperliquid.
Apparently, Several OTC Buyers Are Cashing Out Simultaneously
The Gate transfer was not an isolated case. Onchain Lens reported another instance where a wallet transferred 47,000 $HYPE, worth nearly $3.35 million, to a FalconX account. Onchain Lens believes this transfer was made in preparation for an upcoming sale. Over the past two months, the wallet received a total of 178,700 $HYPE worth nearly $11.5 million and had an unrealized profit of approximately $1.24 million prior to these transfers.
According to Onchain Lens, this fits a trend where buyers who accumulated hype on OTC markets over the summer now appear to be selling their positions.
This is especially important for $HYPE compared to Bitcoin and Ether. Its market is much smaller and less liquid, so a large-scale sale by institutional investors ultimately has a greater impact on the price.
Why Do Exchange Inflows Continue to Worry $HYPE Holders?
Recent events have shown why this is concerning. A report published by Cryptopolitan on August 19 indicated that Multicoin Capital transferred 172,710 $HYPE to Coinbase Prime.
The transferred amount was only a small fraction of Multicoin's total $HYPE position, which stood at about 2.16 million $HYPE, exceeding $126 million. The significance of the transfer lies in the fact that although $HYPE fell below its June peak of $76.87, the total open interest reportedly reached nearly $11.8 billion.
High leverage levels increase risks, as additional supply from sellers can trigger liquidations and worsen negative price momentum.
Previously, Multicoin warned against interpreting every transfer as a sale. After they, together with Paradigm, liquidated $291 million worth of $HYPE tokens in July, co-founder Tushar Jain justified the move by stating they were "not withdrawing funds from staking for sale," but merely moving money between their wallets and aiming to keep their transactions private. In contrast, deposits to exchanges are scrutinized more closely as they facilitate selling.
Now Institutions Are Moving Tokens
The FalconX transactions reflect a market increasingly dominated by large players. An analysis of OTC deals in the first half of 2026 showed that institutional investors accounted for a record 72% of spot flows through their division, while trades concentrated on fewer tokens. Altcoin options volume also tripled since late 2025, indicating the significant market share achieved through derivatives.
FalconX's Q2 analysis showed a similarly weak market condition. Bitcoin fell 14% to around $59,000, and spot trading volume on major exchanges declined 42% compared to the previous year. In a weaker market, targeted selling of a leading altcoin can lead to significant price changes that wouldn't occur in a stronger trading environment.
What Remains on the Other Side of the Trade?
$HYPE still enjoys significant support. FalconX strategist Martin Gaspar noted approximately $300 million in inflows to $HYPE ETFs this quarter, which is quite remarkable for a token with a market cap of about $15 billion. However, total ETF trading volume was only 5-8% of the current volume, indicating that cryptocurrency platforms continue to lead the price discovery process.
Furthermore, $HYPE's tokenomics introduces a balancing factor. An estimated 99% of protocol fees are used for daily buybacks and burns of $HYPE tokens. CoinShares estimated that 44.4 million tokens, worth over $2 billion, have already been used in this process. So far, price momentum has been resilient and not swayed by pessimistic sentiment.
According to Tokenomist data, on August 20, $HYPE reached around $69, showing an incredible surge of over 19%. The next supply check is scheduled for September 6, when major market participants will release data coinciding with the latest OTC market flows.
