Approximately $80 Million in ZEC Moved to the New Zcash Ironwood Pool on the First Day

Resumen

Approximately 176,000 ZEC (worth around $81 million) migrated to the new Zcash Ironwood shielded pool within a day after the network upgrade activated it. This move comes after a vulnerability went unnoticed in the previous Orchard pool for four years. The migrated amount represents about 5% of the 3.66 million ZEC held in Orchard at activation. Zcash stores funds in separate "pools," each representing a generation of its privacy technology. Transparent pools function like Bitcoin, with visible balances and transactions, and currently hold about 12.5 million ZEC. Shielded pools like Sapling (introduced 2018, ~582,000 ZEC) and Orchard (2022, ~3.5 million ZEC) hide transaction amounts and participants. With the Ironwood activation, the Orchard pool is now closed to new deposits. Remaining funds can only be withdrawn via a one-way "turnstile" mechanism, meaning its balance can only decrease. Migration is voluntary, relying on holders, wallets, and exchanges to move their funds. Consequently, the majority of Zcash's shielded supply is now in a pool that no longer accepts new deposits.

Approximately 176,000 $ZEC, worth around $81 million, were transferred to the new shielded Zcash Ironwood pool a day after the update activated and sealed the pool, where a vulnerability had gone unnoticed for 4 years.

This represents about 5% of the 3.66 million $ZEC held in Orchard at the time of activation. According to the Ironwood migration tracker, the Orchard balance has since fallen to approximately 3.51 million, with about 46,000 $ZEC passing through it in the last 24 hours.

Zcash stores funds in separate compartments called pools, each representing a generation of the network's privacy technology. The Transparent pool operates like Bitcoin: every balance and transaction is visible on the blockchain, and it holds about 12.5 million $ZEC.

Shielded pools conceal amounts and participants. The Sapling pool, introduced in 2018, contains about 582,000 $ZEC, while Orchard, which emerged in 2022 and was the newest until this week, held about 3.5 million. Each time the network updates its privacy cryptography, it opens a new pool rather than renovating the old one, leaving it up to holders to move their coins between them.

Orchard can no longer accept deposits. Every coin remaining inside must pass through a turnstile — an accounting rule that limits total withdrawals to the verifiably deposited amount, so the pool's balance can now only decrease.

The migration is voluntary, so the timeline depends on how quickly holders, wallets, and exchanges move funds. For now, the main supply of Zcash is in a pool that has been closed to new money since Tuesday.

Bank of Korea Reveals Results of Tokenized Deposit Testing

The Bank of Korea has announced the results of its pilot test for tokenized deposits. Involving 28 central banks and international financial organizations, the project saw participation from major South Korean banks including KB Kookmin Bank, NH NongHyup Bank, Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank, and Hana Bank. Transactions, from payment orders to final settlement, were completed in real time, averaging just 80 seconds. The test involved 30 transactions across 17 different scenarios—such as corporate and interbank transfers—and was conducted in six currencies, including the Korean won, US dollar, and euro, with a total transaction value reaching approximately $995,000. The central bank reported that the platform operated stably throughout, despite being only partially connected to the existing banking infrastructure. Settlements using tokenized deposits were executed seamlessly, quickly, and transparently. An internal transfer of 20 million won (about $13,890) between NH NongHyup Bank and Shinhan Bank was also successfully processed via the Project Agora platform, which involved connecting to the Bank of Korea's CBDC test platform, Project Hangang. Additionally, KB Kookmin Bank and Japan's MUFG Bank tested cross-border payments using these deposit tokens—digital certificates issued by commercial banks within the pilot, not directly by the central bank. The Bank of Korea plans to continue testing payments with tokenized deposits. This follows last year's pledge by South Korean authorities to tighten regulations for won-based stablecoins, which will require approval from both the central bank and the Financial Services Commission.
