 without meaningful improvements in network activity, decentralized finance (DeFi) adoption and real-world use cases, JPMorgan said in a report last week.

Cryptocurrency markets have struggled for much of the past six months as rising interest rates, persistent inflation concerns and weak risk appetite weighed on digital assets. Bitcoin and ether both saw sharp drawdowns earlier this year alongside heavy exchange-traded funds (ETFs) outflows and broader deleveraging across the sector.

"Both ether and other altcoins have been underperforming bitcoin despite the crypto market recovery since the Iran conflict," wrote analysts led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou.

The analysts pointed to ETF flows as evidence of the divergence, noting that spot bitcoin ETFs have recovered roughly two-thirds of prior outflows, while spot ether ETFs have recovered only about one-third.

Momentum traders, including commodity trading advisors (CTAs) and crypto quant funds, also remain slightly underweight both bitcoin and ether, the report said, suggesting speculative investors have yet to rebuild sizable long positions.

Still, crypto prices have stabilized somewhat since the outbreak of the Iran conflict, with investors drawn to the market’s round-the-clock liquidity and signs of renewed institutional demand. Bitcoin and ether have at times outperformed equities and other risk assets during the conflict, even as volatility remains elevated.

Upcoming Ethereum upgrades, including Glamsterdam and Hegota in 2026, are designed to improve scalability and lower transaction costs. But the bank's analysts cautioned that previous upgrades failed to drive stronger onchain activity.

Data shows Bitcoin dip buyers waiting for lower prices: Is $70K BTC’s next stop?


Bitcoin futures and orderbook data show dip buyers waiting for a BTC price drop below $70,000.Bitcoin (BTC) traders have shifted their focus lower after futures and order book data point to strong buyer interest in the $68,000-$70,000 zone.

Sell pressure has increased in the derivatives markets and the daily bid-ask ratio fell to -0.03, showing sellers are currently more aggressive than buyers as traders position around liquidation levels.

Bitcoin buyers cluster near $68,000
The visible range volume profile (VRVP) indicator shows the $68,000-$70,000 region as the most densely traded zone on the chart since November 2025. High trading activity in that price range suggests most positions were opened near those levels over the past few months.

The order book data also shows a bid-ask ratio of -0.03, with the metric remaining in negative territory for most of the past month as sell-side activity continued to outweigh aggressive buying pressure. Liquidation data adds another pressure point. The heatmap shows more than $3.4 billion in cumulative long positions exposed near $74,700. The figure rises toward $11 billion if Bitcoin falls to $70,000 across the 90-day liquidation range.



Taken together, the positioning data suggests traders are prioritizing deeper liquidity pools rather than chasing higher prices above $80,000.

Spot Gold price dipped below $4,500 an ounce after US consumer and producer price data exceeded forecasts. Silver also posted one of its steepest one-day declines since 2020. Digital Gold, Bitcoin, price dropped marginally but added to the cumulative loss. BTC price is down by 5% over the last 7 days.
Crypto, Gold and Silver tumble
According to the data, April US consumer prices rose 3.8% year-on-year. This is above the expectations of 3.7% set by the economists. At the same time, producer prices jumped 6.0% whiile exceeding a 4.9% forecast.
The inflation surprise pushed the US dollar index above 99 for a fourth straight session. It went on to drive the 10-year Treasury yield up around 14 basis points to 4.596%. This marked the largest one-day increase in a year.

Gold price fell to as low as $4,480.01. It went to hit the weakest level seen since late March. However, it managed to recover and trade around $4,544 on Tuesday.

Bitcoin miner Hut 8 committed $16 million to expand water capacity in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, as part of development plans for its River Bend AI data center campus.

According to a Tuesday announcement, the investment includes a new water well, about eight miles of water main and other system upgrades. Hut 8 said the assets will be transferred to the parish after completion, which is expected in the second half of 2026, at no cost to taxpayers.

Hut 8 said Phase 1 of the River Bend campus represents a multibillion-dollar capital investment and is expected to support about 1,000 construction workers at peak build-out and at least 75 permanent jobs once operational.

The company said the campus will use a closed-loop cooling system designed to reduce ongoing water demand and rely on water sources outside the residential aquifer.

The River Bend campus is part of Hut 8’s North American energy and digital infrastructure platform, which the company said is being developed in partnership with public- and private-sector stakeholders.

Despite posting back-to-back quarterly losses in late 2025 and early 2026, shares of Hut 8 have climbed around 93% year-to-date, according to data from Bitcoinminingstock.io, as investors increasingly focus on the company’s AI infrastructure and power leasing business.

In December 2025, Hut 8 signed a 15-year lease for 245 MW of AI data center capacity at the River Bend campus in a deal the company said is valued at $7 billion. Hut 8 said the agreement includes payments financially backed by Google.

The company followed that agreement in May with another 15-year lease tied to 352 MW of capacity at its Beacon Point campus in Texas in a deal it said is valued at $9.8 billion. Hut 8 added that the two campuses represent a combined $16.8 billion in contracted lease revenue tied to 597 MW of

JPMorgan ether and altcoin analysts said the tokens won’t catch bitcoin without a major lift in network activity.

JPMorgan said ether and the broader altcoin market are unlikely to reverse a multi-year underperformance against bitcoin without a meaningful pickup in network activity, DeFi adoption and real-world use cases.

The bank’s analysts, led by managing director Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, argued that bitcoin continues to outperform ether across nearly every institutional metric. The note lands as bitcoin trades near $76,760 with ether near $2,260.

Bitcoin spot ETFs have recovered roughly two-thirds of outflows tied to the Iran conflict selloff, while ether spot ETFs have recovered only about one-third, JPMorgan said. CME futures positioning in bitcoin sits close to pre-crash levels, while ether has yet to catch up.

“And this underperformance trend that started in 2023 is unlikely to change unless we see meaningful improvements in network activity, DeFi and real world applications,” Panigirtzoglou wrote.

Upcoming Ethereum upgrades Glamsterdam and Hegota are designed to improve scalability and lower transaction costs. JPMorgan cautioned that previous upgrades failed to drive stronger onchain activity and instead reduced Layer 2 costs and main-chain fees, weakening the ETH burn mechanism and increasing net supply.

The bank’s previous warnings on Ethereum upgrades were covered on crypto.news last week, with analysts arguing technical improvements alone cannot offset reduced burning unless demand grows enough to absorb the supply increase.

Beyond ether, JPMorgan said altcoins have underperformed bitcoin since 2023 because of tighter liquidity, weaker market depth and breadth, slower DeFi growth and repeated hacks and security breaches.
