With DTCC preparing to launch its own tokenization service in October and the SEC warning that third-party stock tokens can expose investors to additional ownership and intermediary risks, the numbers reveal a concentrated brokerage layer beneath a market promoted as decentralized.

Tokenization is the practice of representing a real-world asset as a digital token on a blockchain, so that owning the token stands in for owning, or at least tracking, the thing itself. Applied to equities, it means a version of Apple or Nvidia stock that exists in a crypto wallet, trades on crypto exchanges around the clock, and moves between buyers in minutes without touching a traditional brokerage account.

A buyer from basically anywhere in the world can hold exposure to US companies through the same app they use for Bitcoin, at any hour, in fractional amounts, and the market has grown into hundreds of tokenized assets spread across Solana, Ethereum, and several other chains, issued by competing platforms and sold through exchanges ......

Will the crypto industry survive the new EU sanctions tool?

The European Union (EU) has widened its sanctions targeting Russia by banning Justin Sun-owned HTX and 13 other crypto platforms.

The platforms span the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Panama, Georgia, the Marshall Islands, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. They include BitPapa, A7 networks and more.
According to the EU Council, these platforms have acted as conduits for blocked Russian entities to move funds and bypass existing sanctions. The transaction ban prohibits EU persons and firms from doing business with these crypto platforms. 

In particular, Justin Sun-owned HTX’s appearance on the sanctioned list is very noteworthy. The exchange was banned by the U.K in May.

To counter possible freezing of funds, HTX moved its reserves to an unknown third party and has been switching hot wallets, making it difficult to conduct sanction screening. 

However, the EU’s aggressive action to ban crypto services in a third country could exert more pressure and signal an evolution of crypto in sanction enforcement.

Across 28,224 blocks from Jan. 8 through July 25, the average adjustment came to 6.4 percentage points.

That’s a fairly large swing when you consider what the system is trying to do: make only the corrections needed to keep block production hovering around one every ten minutes, especially as mining power rises and falls.
