Anniversary Stacks Bitcoin Staking Upgrade Vote Passes With 99%, Muneeb Says

The Stacks community approved SIP-045, the Bitcoin Staking upgrade, with more than 99% of votes cast in favor, Stacks co-creator Muneeb Ali said, setting up a hard fork targeted for around July 29 at roughly Bitcoin block 907,740.

The upgrade, formally "PoX-5: Bitcoin Staking and Emission Schedule Alignment," lets participants lock $BTC in a timelocked contract on Bitcoin's base layer - under their own keys - and pair it with locked $STX to earn yield paid in bitcoin. A companion proposal, SIP-044, which brings Clarity 6 and new staking post-conditions, passed alongside it. Voting opened July 6; hard-fork votes require at least 80% approval from stacked $STX.

"Bitcoin is the world's most trusted asset precisely because of its design and safety principles on the L1," Ali said when the Bitcoin Staking whitepaper was published in May. "Holders can now earn yield denominated in $BTC, trustlessly, while their Bitcoin stays exactly where it belongs.'

How the Mechanism Works

Stakers fund a timelocked UTXO on Bitcoin using OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY, pair it with an $STX lock equal to at least 5% of the bond, and commit for roughly six months. The Stacks contract verifies the Bitcoin-side lock with an SPV proof - no custodian or trusted bridge. Yield

Dogecoin Returns to Major Accumulation Zone Near $0.07

Dogecoin has fallen into a long-term support area that previously attracted buyers during earlier market corrections. Analyst Surf identified the blue region around $0.055 to $0.080 as a major accumulation zone, with $DOGE trading near $0.069.

The chart shows Dogecoin repeatedly reacting from the same broad price region since 2021. Previous tests near the zone preceded strong recoveries, although the size and timing of each rebound varied.

$DOGE has returned to support after declining from its late-2024 peak near $0.48. The broader structure remains weak because price continues to form lower highs, but the current area may slow selling pressure if buyers step in again.

Holding above roughly $0.055 would preserve the historical support setup and could allow $DOGE to recover toward $0.08 and $0.10. Reclaiming those levels would provide the first evidence that momentum is shifting.

However, the chart does not confirm that a bottom has formed. A decisive breakdown below the blue zone would invalidate the accumulation argument and expose Dogecoin to further losses.

Hyperliquid’s $HYPE was up 1,519% from its launch price at the time of the survey’s publication on July 21st. Ondo Finance’s $ONDO followed at 101.4%, with EverValue Coin (EVA) and Midnight Network ($NIGHT) up a more modest 20.3% and 16.5% respectively.

The European Union (EU) has widened its sanctions targeting Russia by banning Justin Sun-owned HTX and 13 other crypto platforms.

The platforms span the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Panama, Georgia, the Marshall Islands, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. They include BitPapa, A7 networks and more.According to the EU Council, these platforms have acted as conduits for blocked Russian entities to move funds and bypass existing sanctions. The transaction ban prohibits EU persons and firms from doing business with these crypto platforms. 

In particular, Justin Sun-owned HTX’s appearance on the sanctioned list is very noteworthy. The exchange was banned by the U.K in May.

Bitcoin traders are targeting $72,000 after the Fed meets, but options positioning, ETF flows, and heavy resistance could complicate the rally.

The $70,000 to $72,000 range has become a key Bitcoin battleground this year.

In May, CryptoQuant identified $70,000 as major on-chain support before Bitcoin eventually fell through it. The same zone now acts as Bitcoin's resistance.

Bitcoin has spent a cumulative 307 days trading between $60,000 and $70,000, according to Glassnode. A sustained move above roughly $70,000 would therefore mark an escape from one of its most persistent trading ranges.

"The first retest of this resistance zone is expected to catalyze a sharp response," Bitfinex analysts wrote.

Getting there, however, may depend heavily on what happens in Washington.

On-chain spot flow data also reflected a subtle shift after Ethereum recorded a $5.92 million net inflow into exchanges during the latest session.

Positive netflows generally indicate that more $ETH moved onto exchanges than left them, increasing the amount of readily tradable supply.

Although the inflow remained relatively modest, it contrasted with the recent pattern of stronger exchange outflows that had previously limited immediate selling pressure.

Meanwhile, the ETF withdrawal and positive spot netflow pointed in the same direction, showing that fresh supply had started returning to the market.

Even so, the figures remained far below the large exchange inflows that often accompany aggressive selloffs.

Consequently, buyers still retained an opportunity to absorb the additional supply before it significantly altered Ethereum’s broader market structure.
