Bitcoin [BTC] has been on a wild ride four months into 2026. After experiencing volatility in March, the leading cryptocurrency recovered in April. Even though the year got off to a great start, Bitcoin dropped to a low of $65K in March.

Only in April did Bitcoin manage to break $70,000, and by May, it had surpassed $80,000. On the contrary, Ethereum’s price dropped to $1,943 in March, but it recovered to $2,421 in April. At the time of writing, it was trading at $2,388.

Bitcoin’s [BTC] ongoing rally may be influenced only by a small group of investors. That is why some degree of fragility can be associated with the world’s largest cryptocurrency right now.

The next move will be highly dependent on whether demand returns en masse.

Big players demand more Bitcoin!

Corporate Bitcoin holdings have gone up in Q1 2026, reaching 1.15 million BTC according to Bitwise. That’s a 4.6% increase quarter-over-quarter, with the same now accounting for 5.47% of the total supply.

Meanwhile, the total value of these holdings dropped to $77 billion – Down 18.9% over the same period.
Public company participation has been steady too, with 187 firms holding Bitcoin. That’s a slight 2% decline QoQ. The bulk of holdings is still concentrated, led by Strategy, followed by XXI, MARA Holdings, and Metaplanet.

There’s been a rise in buying through 2024 and into early 2026, with over 50,000 BTC added in Q1 alone.

Traders, stay cautious!

Keeping all that aside, sentiment is only just beginning to rise back up. At the time of writing, Bitcoin’s price was attempting to hold above $80,000, with the unified sentiment index moving back into the positive zone. This, after months of weakness.
The index (ranging from -100 to +100) showed that the market was slightly in “greed.” That hinted at increasing belief among investors, so they’d hold and not feel the need to sell.

However, there was a similar move in January. At the time, sentiment entered the greed zone before falling back into another price drop.

Finally, Bitcoin’s network activity dropped to two-year lows, even with the price moving back above $80,000.

April spot BTC ETF inflows totaled $2.44 billion, the strongest monthly figure since October 2025.

Trump’s Project Freedom announcement eased Middle East tensions, sending crude futures down nearly 5%.

The move to $81,000 marks bitcoin’s highest price since January and the first time the cryptocurrency has reclaimed this level after a brutal first-quarter drawdown that had pushed BTC close to $62,000 at its lowest point.

The structural case for Tuesday’s move was built throughout April. Spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) inflows for the month totaled $2.44 billion, the strongest figure since October 2025, signaling that institutional buyers stepped in aggressively during Q1’s dip rather than waiting on the sidelines.

The final trading day of April crystallized the shift with roughly $630 million in net spot BTC ETF inflows hitting the market on May 1. Fidelity added $19 million into its FBTC product as the ETF complex snapped a three-day outflow streak, a concrete sign that institutional conviction was returning.

On the product side, Blackrock’s European bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) crossed $1.1 billion in assets under management, holding 14,200 BTC (as of May 4). Simply put, institutional appetite was not confined to U.S. markets alone.
Another major catalyst came from the Middle East as President Trump announced Project Freedom, a U.S. military operation to escort neutral commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz following Iran’s 14-point peace proposal. The move lifted risk assets broadly, with bitcoin catching one of the most direct bids.

The rally was briefly interrupted when Iran’s Fars news agency issued a false report claiming missiles had struck a U.S. warship. Bitcoin dropped from $80,594 to $79,000 in minutes, and oil spiked 5%. The U.S. denied the report, allowing prices to recover and extend higher.

Michael Saylor's Strategy signals potential bitcoin sale to fund dividends obligations




Strategy (MSTR), the world’s largest publicly traded corporate holder of bitcoin, floated the idea of selling bitcoin in order to cover its dividend obligations.
Executive Chairman Michael Saylor suggested, during its Q1 2026 earnings call, the company may sell a portion of its bitcoin holdings to fund dividend payments, stating: “We will probably sell some bitcoin to pay a dividend just to inoculate the market and send the message that we did it.”

The company disclosed a $12.54 billion net loss for Q4, while maintaining a total bitcoin position of 818,334 BTC at an average acquisition cost of $75,537 per coin.

Strategy has an outstanding dividend obligation of approximately $1.5 billion, including annualized preferred stock dividends and interest on outstanding debt. The firm has roughly 18 months of dividend coverage, based on its USD reserves relative to these obligations.

Saylor described the model as leveraging credit to acquire Bitcoin, allowing it to appreciate, and then selectively selling portions of the asset to meet dividend commitments.
