Crypto holders in France are being violently targeted again — and it’s no longer just insiders

Once the target pool expands beyond executives, the security playbook shifts to delays, multisig, secrecy, and physical protection.
A French couple held at knifepoint in their home near Versailles and forced to transfer roughly €900,000 in Bitcoin would normally read like a rare, tragic story.

But in France, it now fits a pattern serious enough to rattle the industry, draw the interior minister into the fray, and push executives toward bodyguards and tighter personal security measures.

This signals a broader trend: crypto security is becoming a key concern for physical security.

The March 2026 Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt case, in which three men posing as police allegedly coerced the couple into authorizing the transfer, is the latest data point in what French authorities now call a “new criminal phenomenon.”

In January 2026, the Interior Ministry said that “the threat is evolving and now affects private individuals.”

That language marks a shift: crypto crime in France is no longer just a specialist cyber issue, but a personal protection problem requiring high-end policing.

The pattern became unmistakable in 2025. Ledger co-founder David Balland and his partner were kidnapped in January, and a crypto ransom was demanded.

Reuters later reported that Balland's hand was mutilated, and part of the ransom was paid before investigators recovered it.

In May, the father of a wealthy crypto entrepreneur was abducted and had a finger severed. Days later, a masked gang attempted to kidnap the daughter of Paymium CEO Pierre Noizat in broad daylight in Paris.

By the end of May, 25 people were being brought before an investigating judge over the attempted abduction and criminal conspiracy.

Assessing how the midterm election cycle may shape Bitcoin’s volatile year

Bitcoin [BTC] saw fresh demand on Friday, 13 March. AMBCrypto reported that Bitcoin Spot ETFs saw positive inflows of 570 BTC, worth $41.9 million, on the day. This likely contributed to the leading crypto’s rally to the $73.9K-level, with the crypto nearly testing last week’s $74K local high.

Ethereum [ETH] also saw sizeable inflows, and the crypto market cap rose by 4.38% at the zenith for the day. Unfortunately for the bulls, an approach of local highs gave market participants a great chance to book profits, driving BTC prices towards $70K again.


In a post on X, crypto analyst Axel Adler Jr observed that the 30-day Crypto Fear and Greed Index fell to 10%. It matched the extreme levels of pessimism seen during the COVID and LUNA crashes.

This might or might not mark the absolute bottom of this cycle, but the deeply fearful sentiment helped explain why each rally has been aggressively sold off

From a structural standpoint though, Bitcoin has room to rally further. In fact, the Fibonacci retracement levels plotted on the daily timeframe above showed that $89.8K remains a valid target for a relief bounce.


However, investors remain skeptical of the likelihood of a market recovery, according to analyst Darkfost. The funding rate has been negative for most of March. Each price rebound, including the latest one to $73.9K, has faced significant selling pressure too.

The negative funding rates reached extremes on 10-11 March, highlighting that the majority of the market had a bearish bias.

Schiff argued that a more sensible approach for investors might be to sell on Bitcoin rallies and buy on gold rallies.

Schiff also shared his views on the US economy in his statements. Recalling that the economy grew by 2.1% in 2025, the first year of US President Donald Trump’s term, Schiff argued that this was below the growth rates of the previous administration. According to Schiff, while growth was at 2.8% in 2024, the performance in 2025 was weaker.
