Bitcoin Market Not Positioned for Upside Despite Rally Above $80K, Says Bitfinex
Bitcoin ($BTC) is currently on a roll, surging past the $80,000 mark and touching base above $81,000. While this rally could be a reason for positive sentiment, market experts believe otherwise.

In a weekly report from the crypto exchange Bitfinex, analysts warned that bitcoin’s rally to $80,000 is misleading because the market is not positioned for upside movement. According to the analysts, $BTC is currently stuck between bulls and bears, conviction and caution. Considering market conditions, the leading digital asset is likely to lean toward the negative rather than the positive.

A Misleading Rally

To substantiate their claims, the Bitfinex analysts highlighted an improving but uneven demand wave. Based on historical data, $BTC rallies have been sustained by strong demand, but that is not the case this time.

Underlying demand is improving with steady inflows from spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and continued accumulation from institutions like Strategy. However, the demand is not strong enough to absorb the overhead supply and confirm a sustained breakout. In fact, $BTC is in a fragile yet constructive range, with short-term holders taking profits as they exit positions near breakeven.

“This behavior is a textbook pattern in bear markets: whenever the price approaches the breakeven level of the most price-sensitive cohort, the incentive to exit positions overwhelms incoming demand, exhausting upside momentum,” analysts stated.

Bitcoin requires heavy spot-led demand to sustain a rally. However, with a divided macro environment, no clear liquidity tailwind, and ongoing geopolitical risk in the Middle East, that may seem unlikely in the short term.

He added that any future Bitcoin sales would depend on market conditions and Bitcoin prices. CEO Phong Le also noted that selling Bitcoin could provide tax advantages that may strengthen the company’s balance sheet.Despite the accounting losses, Strategy continued expanding its Bitcoin portfolio. According to Coinbase’s Q2 2026 crypto report, produced in partnership with Glassnode, the cryptocurrency market is expected to form a bottom soon.

Notably, in Q1 2026, the global cryptocurrency market capitalization fell by 18%. At the same time, the stablecoin market grew from $308 billion to $318 billion.

That said, roughly 70% of non-institutions and 82% of institutions have categorized the crypto market as being in –
Either the bear market (markdown) or late bear market phases.

Though this might look concerning on the surface, it’s quite a jump from 1% and 36% in December 2025, respectively.

Conclusively, Bitcoin reclaimed $80K as whale accumulation strengthened and on-chain metrics improved. However, resistance near $80K–$84.9K remained critical. If accumulation continued absorbing supply, price could extend higher.

The company partnered with Centrifuge, a company operating in the tokenization field, making a “seven-figure” investment in the startup and selecting its platform as the main tokenization partner for the Base network.
The centrifuge-related altcoin $CFG experienced a sudden surge following the development. As of writing, $CFG has gained 10% in value over the last 24 hours.

Centrifuge will now be the core infrastructure provider on the Base network, developed by Coinbase, enabling exchange-traded funds (ETFs), loan funds, structured products, and other real-world assets (RWA) to be traded on the blockchain.

Bitcoin [BTC] reclaimed the $80,000 level for the first time since the 31st of January as whale accumulation accelerated, with 4,527 BTC worth about $362 million absorbed within 24 hours. This surge reflected strong conviction from large holders who removed supply from circulation rather than distributing. 

As a result, available liquidity across exchanges appeared constrained, reinforcing a tightening supply environment for Bitcoin. In addition, sustained whale accumulation often signaled early positioning ahead of broader market expansion. This behavior suggested that large players anticipated higher valuations despite recent volatility. 

While retail demand remained uneven, the scale of this absorption created a structural base that could support continued upside if demand conditions strengthened further.
