Crypto greed gauge hits highest since just before October’s $19 billion wipeoutCrypto traders have swung from fear to greed in less than a fortnight.

The widely watched Crypto Fear & Greed Index reached 74 on Tuesday, up from 27 on Aug. 12, before easing to 65 on Wednesday. It spent every day from late July through Aug. 19 in fear territory, dipping to 25 on Aug. 6, which the index classifies as “extreme fear.”

The gauge scores market mood from zero to 100 by blending bitcoin's volatility and trading momentum — which carry most of the weight — with social media activity, bitcoin's share of total crypto value and Google search interest. Anything above 50 counts as greed.

As such, it measures what traders are doing now rather than forecasting what happens next.

Data shows the index last sat this high on Oct. 5, 2025, five days before the crash that forced roughly $19 billion of leveraged positions to close in a single session, still the largest such event on record.

The shift in sentiment has come with gains across the market. Bitcoin climbed from below $68,000 last week to nearly $80,000, while some major tokens added as much as 70% as traders turned back toward the so-called debasement trade after months in which speculative attention had been dominated by AI, memory chips and semiconductor stocks.

Further down the market the moves are larger still. Dogecoin has gained about 24% over the past week. Smaller memecoins have run far harder, with Thinking Cat up 131% over seven days, Cash Cat 113% and Dog (Bitcoin) close to doubling.

Money moving into thinly traded tokens like these is a strong indication of risk appetite returning, and such high readings can indicate investors are getting carried away and that the market may be due a correction.

The next test comes Friday, when Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first Jackson Hole keynote as chair. Markets are looking for clues on rates and inflation after we

Foreign media reports that while institutions continue to release bullish signals, Bitcoin's on-chain holdings structure has not strengthened in tandem. Multiple address data points show that retail investors remain cautious, while some large holders have begun reducing their positions after the recent price surge, creating cracks in the current one-sided optimism.

Institutional Expectations Continue to Rise

Recently, several bullish signals have emerged in the market. Robinhood mentioned that more countries may follow the US in establishing strategic reserves; Standard Chartered Bank reiterated its $500,000 target for Bitcoin; and Changpeng Zhao and Arthur Hayes continued to express bullish views. Meanwhile, Strategy's launch of a $1.6 billion funding plan further reinforced market expectations of continued Bitcoin purchases.

The report also mentioned that Strive reportedly increased its holdings by over 1,100 BTC with approximately $80 million, bringing its total holdings to over 21,000 BTC. The continued accumulation by multiple institutions, coupled with more aggressive price predictions, has further fueled the bullish narrative in the market.

 A Divergence Between Retail and Medium-Sized Holding Addresses

However, on-chain address balance data does not show that all groups are chasing the price increase. Addresses holding 0.001 to 1 BTC have seen a continuous decline in holdings since late July, with no significant replenishment in August. Addresses holding 1 to 100 BTC have also been distributing their holdings since mid-July.

In contrast, addresses holding 100 to 1000 BTC, after a continuous decline from May to early July, have recently resumed increasing their holdings. Addresses holding 1000 to 10,000 BTC, after selling in early August, have also shown signs of accumulating again.

Foreign crypto businesses now face broader sanctions exposure when dealing with Iran-linked counterparties following the Treasury Department’s latest economic campaign. The Treasury launched Operation Economic Outcast on Aug. 24, targeting nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels connected to Iranian nuclear, missile, cyber, and oil networks.

Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis wrote:

“One of the most sweeping components of the package is a first-of-its-kind sectoral determination that allows OFAC to sanction anyone globally that operates in or supports Iran’s digital assets sector.”

“OFAC additionally targeted individuals supporting Iran through crypto-enabled trade payments and theft,” Chainalysis added.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) expanded its authority under Executive Order 13902 to cover five Iranian economic sectors. The determination includes Iran’s digital asset sector alongside aviation, gold, shipping, and technology, allowing OFAC to sanction people found to operate in those sectors.

The designation extends an enforcement campaign that previously focused on specific exchanges and transactions tied to sanctioned Iranian parties. OFAC sanctioned four major Iranian crypto exchanges in June, including Nobitex, which handled more than half of Iran’s digital asset inflows during 2025, according to the Treasury.

$100M Crypto Network Supports Iranian Oil Sales

The latest package targets Ukrainian national Ivan Obukhov, a United Arab Emirates-based broker accused of facilitating oil shipments for Iran’s military and its proxies. Since 2023, Obukhov has processed more than $100 million in cryptocurrency payments supporting oil sales for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force, according to Treasury and Chainalysis.

Cryptocurrency asset management company Grayscale has launched a new exchange-traded product (ETF) in the US, offering investment in the privacy-focused altcoin Zcash ($ZEC). The company’s Zcash ETF, ZCSH, began trading on the NYSE Arca today.

Created by converting the Grayscale Zcash Trust into an ETF, ZCSH is the first exchange-traded product in the US to focus on $ZEC. According to shared data, as of August 24, the fund had approximately $314 million in assets under management, with approximately 387,200 $ZEC in its portfolio.

The annual management fee for ZCSH has been set at 2.5%. Grayscale also announced that revenue from these management fees, earned for up to 12 months following the effective date of the registration notification, will be used to support the Zcash ecosystem and for product marketing activities.

In its announcement of the new product, Grayscale described Zcash as one of the leading digital currencies that provides financial privacy. The company stated that Zcash allows users to choose whether or not to keep their transaction details private, combining this with a limited supply and mining-based monetary policy similar to Bitcoin.

Grayscale noted that while Bitcoin transactions are traceable on a public blockchain, Zcash, with its maximum supply of 21 million units and proof-of-work consensus mechanism, allows users to keep their balances and transactions private.

The company also argued that the use of privacy features on Zcash is steadily increasing. According to Grayscale, shielded transactions account for more than 50% of user activity at times, while improvements in wallet infrastructure and scalability are facilitating the use of private digital payments.
