In a heated discussion on X, the executive challenged the XRP community’s long-held belief that burning tokens directly influences their immediate price action or automatically triggers a sharp price rally.

David Schwartz, the former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Ripple, has taken to X to share new details about XRP burning and its direct influence on price. Notably, Schwartz’s statements come in response to the recent backlash and criticism stemming from Ripple’s latest $750 million share buyback.

In a post on March 12, a pseudonymous XRP community member known as ‘XRP Launch’ on X tagged several of Ripple’s top executives, including Schwartz, CEO Brad Garlinghouse, President Monica Long, and CLO Stuart Alderoty. The user questioned the company’s recent share buyback, asking why Ripple would prioritize this approach over initiatives that directly benefit XRP holders.

He urged the executives to consider burning the XRP currently held in escrow rather than pursuing share buybacks that primarily benefit Ripple as a company. In a sarcastic remark, he added that perhaps the escrow cannot be burned, as doing so might push XRP’s price beyond $1.39.

Responding to the remarks, Schwartz shared a price chart illustrating the historical performance of both XRP and Stellar (XLM). The chart highlights volatility in both assets, with notable price spikes in some months and relatively subdued action in others. The former Ripple CTO then challenged the XRP member to identify where, on the chart, XLM had burned half of its total supply.

On March 17, the US Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission jointly issued a 68-page interpretive rule. It establishes a formal taxonomy for crypto assets under federal securities law for the first time. The rule supersedes the SEC staff’s 2019 framework and represents the most comprehensive federal guidance since the 2017 DAO Report.

The bottom line: the US government has finally told the crypto industry which tokens are securities and which are not — before suing anyone.

‘The Wait Is Over’

SEC Chairman Paul Atkins called the rule a turning point after more than a decade of regulatory ambiguity. “This interpretation acknowledges what the former administration refused to recognize — that most crypto assets are not themselves securities,” he said. He added that this is what regulatory agencies are supposed to do: draw clear lines in clear terms.

CFTC Chairman Michael Selig struck a similar tone in his own statement on the joint release. “For far too long, American builders and entrepreneurs have awaited clear guidance,” he said. “With today’s interpretation, the wait is over.”

The rule is the latest product of the pro-crypto policy shift that accelerated after President Donald Trump took office in January 2025. Trump signed an executive order establishing a Presidential Working Group on Digital Asset Markets, which issued a report in July 2025 calling on the SEC and CFTC to provide regulatory clarity using their existing authorities. Chairman Atkins launched “Project Crypto” in response, and in January 2026, it became a joint SEC-CFTC initiative. The interpretive rule released on March 17 is Project Crypto’s first formal output.

A Five-Category Taxonomy

The rule sorts crypto assets into five categories: digital commodities, digital collectibles, digital tools, stablecoins, and digital securities. The first three categories are explicit

Vitalik Buterin has proposed a new Fast Confirmation Rule mechanism to boost transaction speed and assurance, leading the way for a more reliable and user-friendly Ethereum network.

According to a X post of Buterin on March 18, the new proposal aims to provide users with a high level of confidence that transactions will not be reversed after just one slot, which is approximately 12 seconds.

As per the article published by Julian, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, currently, it can take several minutes to transfer money from Ethereum’s main network to Layer 2 solutions or exchanges. With the new rule mechanism, cash might travel across platforms considerably more quickly, which could reduce that wait by as much as 80% or 98%.

Faster Transfers and Improved Capital Efficiency

With that, platforms may be able to deploy capital more effectively and increase liquidity with faster confirmations. There may be less risk and expense associated with delays for bridges and transaction processors.

Also, Buterin added that the network works based on two main security assumptions, where the majority of validators behave honestly, as the network remains fast, with delays of less than three seconds. As this confirmation rule is not as robust as full economic finality, it still provides a reliable level of assurance for practical use cases.

It is expected to be implemented in the upcoming months. Also, the update does not call for a hard fork, meaning it could be implemented without affecting the current Ethereum network.
