Ethereum’s slide behind Bitcoin is no longer just a price story; JPMorgan says the institutional plumbing now confirms that $BTC has pulled decisively ahead on flows, leaving $ETH and the wider altcoin complex struggling to keep up.

According to a research note summarized by CoinMarketCap Academy and other outlets, JPMorgan analysts led by managing director Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou argue that Ethereum ($ETH) and the broader altcoin market “may continue to underperform Bitcoin ($BTC)” unless there is “meaningful improvement” in network activity, decentralized finance (DeFi) adoption and real‑world applications. The bank traces the current divergence back to the October 2025 deleveraging, when a sharp, geopolitics‑driven selloff triggered heavy liquidations in $ETH products relative to $BTC, particularly among systematic and crypto‑native traders. While markets have since stabilized, the analysts say $ETH has failed to fully regain lost ground either in price terms or in key institutional flow metrics.

JPMorgan highlights spot ETF flows as one of the clearest signs of that gap. The bank estimates that spot Bitcoin ETFs have now recovered roughly two‑thirds of the outflows they suffered during the October 2025 drawdown, while spot ether ETFs have only clawed back about one‑third of their redemptions over the same period. Futures positioning at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) tells a similar story: institutional Bitcoin exposure on regulated futures has “nearly fully restored” to pre‑selloff levels, but $ETH futures open interest and net long positioning remain well below earlier peaks. Momentum‑driven players such as commodity trading advisors and quant funds are described as “slightly underweight” both assets, but the underweight is more pronounced in $ETH, reflecting the heavier deleveraging it endured last October.

US investment bank JPMorgan stated that for Ethereum and the altcoin market to reverse their long-standing weak performance against Bitcoin, strong growth in network usage, decentralized finance (DeFi) adoption, and real-world use cases is needed.

The bank’s report, published last week, stated that cryptocurrency markets have been under pressure for the past six months due to rising interest rates, persistent inflationary pressures, and weak risk appetite. During this period, both Bitcoin and Ethereum experienced sharp pullbacks, while massive outflows from spot ETFs and reduced leverage in the market further increased selling pressure.

JPMorgan analysts said that despite a recovery in the crypto market following the Iran conflict, Ethereum and other altcoins continue to lag behind Bitcoin. The team of analysts, led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, stated that one of the clearest indicators of this divergence is ETF flows. According to the report, spot Bitcoin ETFs have recovered approximately two-thirds of their previous outflows, while spot $ETH ETFs have only recovered about one-third.

The report also noted that momentum investors, such as CTAs and crypto-focused quantitative funds, are still slightly underpositioned in both Bitcoin and Ethereum. This indicates that speculative investors have not yet formed strong long positions.

On the other hand, JPMorgan noted that cryptocurrency prices have stabilized somewhat following the start of the conflict with Iran. Investors are reportedly turning to cryptocurrencies due to the 24/7 availability of markets and signs of renewed institutional demand. According to the bank, while Bitcoin and $ETH have occasionally outperformed stocks and other risky assets, market volatility remains high.

Bitcoin trades around $76,600 at press time on Wednesday, maintaining a mildly bearish near-term tone as it holds below the 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at $76,736 while remaining well below the 200-day EMA at $82,978.

This configuration suggests rallies are being capped by overhead trend resistance, a view reinforced by a soft Relative Strength Index (RSI) around 44 and a deeply negative Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD), which together hint that upside momentum is fading rather than building.

On the downside, structural support is seen near the prior uptrend break at $70,875, where buyers could look to defend the broader rising trend.

On the topside, immediate resistance is defined by the 50-day EMA at $76,736, with a stronger cap emerging at the 200-day EMA near $82,978. A daily close back above these moving averages would start to ease the current bearish bias and open the door to a more sustained recovery.
