A deleted social media post by a White House official briefly pushed down oil prices—but prices rebounded quickly after U.S. intelligence detected signs that Iran was planning to deploy mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that carries about one-fifth of the world's daily oil supply.

The deleted post and the market volatility

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright posted on social media that the U.S. Navy had safely escorted an oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz, a statement that briefly calmed the market and caused crude oil prices to fall.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt subsequently confirmed the post was false. Wright deleted the post. Oil prices then surged.

This incident shook an already jittery market and drew strong condemnation from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who accused Washington of deliberately spreading disinformation to manipulate oil prices.

“This will not protect them from the tsunami of inflation they have imposed on Americans,” Araqchi said.

 The intelligence that triggered the price surge came from CBS White House correspondent Jennifer Jacobs, who reported that U.S. intelligence assets had detected signs of Iranian mine-laying activity in the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent crude climbed above $90 after falling to an intraday low of around $82 a barrel. U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude rose above $80 after touching $77 in early trading.

Both crudes were still down significantly for the day, but the speed of the rebound highlighted how sensitive traders are to any supply threats in this chokepoint.

The ongoing war between the US and Iran, events in the Middle East, and the rapid rise in oil prices have all begun to fuel fears about inflation and the Federal Reserve.

At this point, with discussions suggesting a possible delay in Fed interest rate cuts, or even a decision to raise rates, economists’ expectations have emerged.

Most economists surveyed by Reuters expect the Fed to cut interest rates by 25 basis points next quarter, bringing them to between 3.25% and 3.50%.

Of the 96 economists surveyed, 63 supported this view; this is higher than the 51 out of 101 participants who predicted a rate cut in the February survey.

In a survey conducted between March 6-12, all economists expect the Fed to keep interest rates unchanged at 3.50-3.75 percent on March 18.

However, approximately two-thirds of economists predict that the Fed will cut interest rates to 3.25-3.50 percent in June.

In contrast, 29 of the 37 economists surveyed said it was more likely that the Fed would keep interest rates stable for an extended period.

The survey median suggests there could be two interest rate cuts by the end of the year.
