SpaceX's Nasdaq 100 inclusion comes with a historical warningSpaceX (SPCX) is set to officially join Wall Street's tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 index on July 7 after raising $75 billion in the largest iPO of all time in mid-June.

The stock immediately surged to as high as $225 in the days after the June 12 IPO,only to deflate to $162 last week. Now the big question is what happens after it is included in the Nasdaq index.

The answer is not necessarily bullish when viewed through the lens of history.

Past data suggests that index inclusion, often viewed as a positive milestone, is not a reliable bullish signal, particularly after a stock has already experienced a significant rally.

That's because, in many cases, investor optimism is already elevated and peaked, passive fund buying has largely been anticipated, and expectations are priced in.

The two most notable recent additions to the Nasdaq 100 highlight this pattern.

Palantir (PLTR), the software giant, joined the index on Dec. 23, 2024, but the stock peaked around the time of its inclusion and declined roughly 25% in the weeks that followed.

A similar story played out with Strategy (MSTR), the largest publicly traded company holding bitcoin. Although it officially entered the Nasdaq 100 on Dec. 23, 2024, the stock had already reached its cycle high a month earlier, peaking near $543 in November, while bitcoin was trading around $100,000. Today, the stock trades around $100, roughly an 80% correction from its peak.

Coinbase AI draws backlash after pushing World Cup result before kickoff


Coinbase (COIN) sent users a false “breaking news” alert saying Norway's soccer team beat Brazil 3-2 in a World Cup knockout match before the game had even started.

The alert said Erling Haaland scored twice in the match at MetLife Stadium. Coinbase’s own prediction-market page still listed the game as weather-delayed at the time.

Users posted screenshots of the notification on X on Sunday. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong replied to one saying he was looking into it with the team. According to one post, the alert was sent at 10:26 a.m. ET. The match didn't start until 4 p.m.

Max Branzburg, the company's head of consumer & business products, later clarified that the incorrect story was fixed and the firm “made some updates to avoid these types of inaccuracies in the future.”

“It’s awesome to see the power of AI-enabled 24/7 insights for trading, but obviously still need to tune it to address these types of issues,” Branzburg wrote on X.

The actual match did see Norway beat Brazil, and Haaland scored twice. The final score was 2-1.

The error landed as Coinbase pushes deeper into prediction markets. The company rolled out prediction markets to U.S. users in January through Kalshi, offering contracts tied to sports, elections, economic data and other real-world events.

Coinbase has framed the product as part of a broader effort to become an “everything exchange.” The company also added stock options, pre-IPO markets and an AI adviser as it tries to fold more financial activity into one app.

CoinDesk reached out to Coinbase but hadn’t heard back by publication time.

Notably, both the two-year breakeven rate and WTI oil prices, which influence inflation, have slipped to levels last seen before the onset of the Iran war in late February.
This is leading some observers to question inflation concerns, Fed interest-rate-hike bets and the dollar's strength. Bullish positioning is lopsided and vulnerable to sudden unwinding that could put the Dollar Index (DXY) under pressure. Such a snap adjustment could happen on July 14, when

easyJet agreed in principle to accept Castlelake's revised £6.90-a-share offer.

The deal values the airline at up to £5.52 billion on a fully diluted basis.

If successful, private ownership could alter easyJet's strategic direction.

Shares of easyJet jumped about 10% on Monday to a four-year high after the airline agreed in principle to accept a £5.5 billion ($7.3 billion) takeover offer from US investment firm Castlelake, potentially paving the way for one of the biggest deals in the European aviation sector this year.

The budget airline said on Sunday that it was prepared to accept Castlelake's revised offer of £6.90 per share after weeks of negotiations and several rejected bids.

The companies have requested an extension to the deadline for formally completing the transaction.

The proposed offer values easyJet's equity at £5.23 billion, rising to £5.52 billion on a fully diluted basis, and represents a 24% premium to the airline's closing share price on Friday.

Castlelake now has until Aug. 3 to make a firm offer or walk away from the deal.
