Ethlabs Forms Independent Research Group to Strengthen Ethereum’s Core Network

A group of senior Ethereum contributors has launched Ethlabs, a nonprofit research and development organization built to prepare the network for a new wave of institutional and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven activity.

The initiative is funded by a coalition led by Bitmine Immersion Technologies, Sharplink, Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin, and other ecosystem backers, including Anchorage, Octant, and SNZ.

Ethlabs is designed to reinforce Ethereum’s core principles of credible neutrality, censorship resistance and security while helping the network scale for stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets, funds, decentralized finance and autonomous AI commerce.

The organization was co-founded by five former senior Ethereum Foundation researchers: Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnabé Monnot, Caspar Schwarz-Schilling, Josh Rudolf, and Julian Ma. Their past work spans finality, scaling, data availability, the Ethereum Virtual Machine ( EVM), and protocol economics.

A New Research Home for Ethereum’s Core Builders

Ethlabs arrives as the Ethereum ecosystem moves toward a more distributed development model. As the Ethereum Foundation narrows its mandate, independent groups are taking on larger roles in protocol research and infrastructure development.

Ethlabs will focus first on areas that matter to institutions moving onchain: faster settlement, stronger interoperability, mainnet capacity, native issuance, cross-chain movement, and research into $ETH’s monetary properties.

Where Did All the Money Go

For anyone confused about why Bitcoin has been bleeding while the stock market printed record highs, Michael Saylor laid it out in a recent interview. The AI industry is currently trying to raise approximately $500 billion to power data centres, and that capital has to come from somewhere. A portion of it, he said, is coming directly from Bitcoin.

“They’re creating a suction and they’re sucking capital out of every other asset class,” Saylor said. “One or two percent of that capital is coming from Bitcoin.”

His view is that this rotation is temporary by nature. Once the AI deals close and lockup periods expire, the traders and hedge funds who got in early will rotate profits back into other assets including Bitcoin. He estimates a 12 to 24 week cycle before that reversal becomes visible, pointing to the end of 2026 as the window where things start to shift.

What the Data Is Saying

The 2018 bear market lasted 364 days. The 2022 bear market lasted 367 days. The current cycle is approximately 200 days old. If history holds, the bottom arrives around 160 days from now, in the second half of 2026.

Altcoin supply Is tightening – Traders, is the altseason narrative back?Altcoins have struggled to establish a clear trend as liquidity remains concentrated in a class of assets. While some tokens continue facing profit-taking and exchange inflows, others are beginning to show signs of supply tightening.

Against this backdrop, Gate’s net flow data indicates that there is selective capital rotation in the altcoin sector rather than a complete exit from the space. Between late 2025 and mid-June 2026, numerous asset classes demonstrated consistent withdrawal-dominant behavior.

When withdrawals occur for extended periods of time, it typically signals investor activity. The nature of this investor activity can vary and may include either selling or simply moving coins.As these outflows continued, the accumulation signals began to grow stronger. On the flip side, Ethereum [ETH], Chainlink [LINK], Uniswap [UNI], and 1Inch [1INCH] were exhibiting higher deposit activity vs. withdrawals.

Therefore, capital appears to be rotating toward selected altcoins rather than supporting the market uniformly. If broader conditions improve, assets already showing sustained outflows could be better positioned to attract speculative demand.

Altcoins show signs of recovery
As capital rotates toward specific altcoins, the decreasing supplies of exchanges have begun to show similar signs of this transition within the broader market.

The Altcoin Cycle Signal has now reached Altcoin Season at 86. This was the highest number it had been since late 2022. Yet, early in 2024 and through early 2025, the signal had mostly stayed under the critical 50 threshold, further indicating that markets were dominated by Bitcoin [

Warsh-Led Fed Reprices Rate Expectations as Inflation Risks Move Higher

Crypto markets entered a tighter liquidity environment after the Federal Reserve held rates steady while signaling a firmer stance on inflation. Wintermute, a crypto market maker and liquidity provider, said the shift created a more challenging backdrop for digital assets reliant on sustained capital inflows.

Referring to the Fed’s policy shift and its implications for capital flows into digital assets, Wintermute wrote:

“For an asset class that needs liquidity arriving through ETFs, stablecoins and DATs, a Fed leaning toward tightening is the opposite of what gets those funnels flowing.”

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) channel institutional capital into crypto markets, stablecoins provide dollar-linked liquidity used for trading and settlement, and digital asset treasuries commonly refer to corporate or institutional balance sheets allocating funds to crypto. Tighter monetary policy typically raises borrowing costs and reduces risk appetite, which can slow inflows across all three channels.

Federal Reserve officials, at Kevin Warsh’s first meeting as chair, removed any easing bias and shifted projections toward tighter policy. The median 2026 rate outlook rose to 3.8% from 3.4%, with nine of 18 policymakers now expecting at least one hike this year and 17 flagging upside inflation risks. Markets reacted quickly, pushing December hike odds to about 77% from roughly 24% a month earlier.

Officials also shortened the policy statement to 130 words from 341, reinforcing the sharper change in tone. Brent crude fell 8.2% during the week on expectations tied to a reopening of the Strait, yet Wintermute noted that the Fed’s inflation concern appeared broader than energy.
