Earlier this year, a hacker tried to double-spend litecoin ($LTC) before an emergency, 13-block reorganization thwarted the attack.

Even though developers have released a flurry of code patches to prevent a repeat, most of the Litecoin network’s nodes have still not installed the fix.

The patch has been available for free download for nearly two months. Nonetheless, of the nodes tracked by a major monitoring service, less than 30% are running up-to-date software that would reject the type of transactions behind April’s double-spending attempt.

Sadly, the largest cohort of node operators on the Litecoin network by software version run v0.21.4. This vulnerable version is live on roughly 39% of reachable nodes, most of which are non-mining.

Fortunately, most mining Litecoin nodes have updated their software, despite most validating nodes, which comprise the majority of the network, still operating with old, buggy code.

How Does Zcash's Halving Impact Miner Revenue and Long Term Supply?

Zcash's second halving, which occurred on November 23, 2024, at block height 2,726,400, cut the block reward from 3.125 $ZEC to 1.5625 $ZEC. For miners, that meant an immediate 50% drop in $ZEC earned per block. For the broader market, it reduced the rate at which new $ZEC enters circulation, tightening supply in a network that mirrors Bitcoin's hard cap of 21 million coins. As of June 19, 2026, $ZEC trades in the range of $448 to $481, with roughly 16.7 million $ZEC in circulation out of a maximum supply of 21 million.

How Does the Zcash Halving Work?

Zcash launched in October 2016 as a fork of the Bitcoin codebase, inheriting its core monetary structure along with one major addition: the ability to send fully private transactions using zero-knowledge proofs called zk-SNARKs (Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge). In simple terms, a zk-SNARK lets the network confirm a transaction is valid without revealing who sent it, who received it, or how much was transferred.

Like Bitcoin, Zcash caps its total supply at 21 million coins and reduces its block reward by 50% approximately every four years. Each halving occurs at intervals of 1,680,000 blocks, with blocks produced roughly every 75 seconds. Here is the full reward history:

October 2016 (launch): 12.5 $ZEC per block, with a block time of 150 seconds

December 2019 (Blossom upgrade, block 653,600): Block time was halved from 150 seconds to 75 seconds, and the block reward was simultaneously halved from 12.5 $ZEC to 6.25 $ZEC to keep daily issuance constant. This is not counted as an official halving.

November 18, 2020 (first halving, block 1,046,400): Reward dropped from 6.25 $ZEC to 3.125 $ZEC. This coincided with the Canopy network upgrade, which also ended the original Founders Reward.

The European Union has approved anti-money laundering rules that will ban regulated crypto firms from supporting privacy coins while leaving direct Bitcoin transfers between private wallets outside the scope of mandatory identification requirements.

According to Regulation (EU) 2024/1624, which will take effect on July 10, 2027, crypto-asset service providers operating in the bloc will face stricter customer verification obligations and new restrictions on services that enhance transaction anonymity.

The regulation arrives alongside a bloc-wide €10,000 (around $11,500) limit on commercial cash payments and introduces additional compliance requirements for several industries considered vulnerable to money laundering risks.

Bitcoin transfers between private wallets remain outside AML checks
Under the new framework, regulated crypto businesses, including exchanges and custodians, must conduct full customer due diligence for occasional crypto transactions worth €1,000 (around $1,150) or more.

For transactions below that threshold, providers must still identify customers, although they are not required to complete the same level of verification applied to larger transactions or ongoing business relationships.

At the same time, the regulation explicitly prohibits anonymous crypto accounts and services that allow transaction anonymization or increased obfuscation, including those involving anonymity-enhancing cryptocurrencies.

While the rules effectively prevent regulated crypto firms from listing, custodying, or facilitating transactions involving privacy-focused assets, the legislation does not prohibit individuals from owning or privately using those cryptocurrencies.
