In its latest weekly market update, the crypto market maker said two macro developments helped lift risk assets. U.S. consumer inflation for May came in at 4.2% year over year, the third straight monthly acceleration and the highest reading since 2023. Yet the figure matched expectations, which was enough to calm investors who had feared a hotter print.

Core inflation offered a better signal, easing to 2.9%. Wintermute said that suggests the latest price pressure may be driven more by energy than by a broader rise in wages and services.

Lawmakers are set to debate several cryptocurrency tax bills Tuesday afternoon amid growing questions over how tax rules should apply to digital assets and whether the measures can attract bipartisan support.

The House Ways and Means Committee, the primary tax-writing panel in the House, is set to hold a hearing at 2 p.m. ET to discuss a slew of crypto bills — from language that would create a cap for when assets would be taxable to clarifying how taxes apply to staking and mining.

The hearing comes as Senate lawmakers grapple with how to advance the Clarity Act, legislation that would establish the first comprehensive federal framework for regulating the cryptocurrency industry. It follows last year’s enactment of a federal stablecoin bill, with regulators now working to implement its provisions.

On-chain and derivatives data suggest positioning is picking up. According to data from CryptoQuant, Ethereum open interest jumped 7.7%, marking its largest daily increase in a month.

Rising Open Interest alongside price appreciation typically signals that new positions are entering the market, adding weight to the debate over what is fueling $ETH’s breakout.
