South Korea’s Crypto Market Loses Half Its Value as Trading Activity CratersSouth Korean investors’ crypto holdings fell by more than 60 trillion won over about a year, according to local reporting.

FIU/FSS survey data showed average daily trading volume fell 15%, from 6.4 trillion won to 5.4 trillion won.

Stablecoin holdings reached 871.9 billion won by year-end, showing continued demand for dollar-linked tokens.

South Korea’s retail crypto market has contracted sharply from its late-2025 peak, with investor holdings dropping by more than 60 trillion won (AU$56.3 billion) as trading volumes weakened and domestic equities pulled capital away from digital assets.

Local reporting from The Chosun Daily said South Korean investors’ crypto holdings more than halved over about a year, with falling token prices and a stronger stock market both contributing to the drawdown. 

The Bank of Korea said total virtual-asset value began 2025 at 121.8 trillion won (AU$114.3 billion) and fell to 89.2 trillion won (AU$83.6 billion) by June as investor sentiment weakened.

The grants feed into four parts of Tether’s open-source stack. QVAC is the company’s on-device AI platform, where inference runs locally without sending data to external servers.

The Wallet Development Kit lets developers embed self-custodial wallets directly into apps, handling key generation, transaction signing, and fund transfers without hosted services.

MDK targets Bitcoin mining infrastructure. Pears supports peer-to-peer networking. Grants also cover documentation, research into edge AI and cryptography, and tooling for open standards.

According to Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, current technology stacks often impose structural trade-offs on developers. Many solutions either depend on centralized intermediaries that exert control over application behavior, or rely on business models that incentivize extensive data collection and reuse, which he describes as misaligned with user interests.

“We’re taking a different approach. If you can build something that runs locally, holds value directly, and doesn’t rely on external providers, we’ll fund it. That’s how you get real systems into the market,” Ardoino state

Tether has made a series of targeted contributions to Bitcoin and open-source development efforts, including $100,000 grants awarded in consecutive years to the BTCPay Server Foundation and a $250,000 donation to OpenSats in late 2025.

Bitcoin moved above $80,000 and held those levels for a few days. With this, the popular gauge of the largest digital currency’s reached 61.3% — the highest reading in more than six months.

On the surface, elevated Bitcoin dominance signals cryptocurrency market participants are favoring that asset over its peers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean bad news for altcoins and the CoinShares Altcoins ETF (DIME). Examining the details more closely matters and upon doing that, market participants may find that DIME is worth considering over the near-term.

“This rise matters because investors still prefer Bitcoin’s relative strength while broader market confidence remains fragile. However, beneath this dominance surge, altcoins slowly began stabilizing after months of sustained pressure,” reported AMB Crypto.

Translation: Bitcoin can act as a rising tide that lifts all sails across the cryptocurrency landscape and while the percentage gains won’t be uniform, Bitcoin strength can matriculate to other digital assets, potentially benefiting the actively managed DIME in the process.
