Amazon boosts CAPEX to $44.2B, up from $25B last year

Amazon just dropped $44.2 billion in a single quarter on capital expenditures. That’s not a typo. The figure represents a 77% increase from the $25 billion the company spent in the same period last year, and it signals that Amazon’s AI spending spree is accelerating, not slowing down.

The numbers behind Amazon’s AI bet

The quarterly figure is eye-catching on its own, but zoom out and the picture gets even more dramatic. Amazon’s trailing twelve-month capex now sits at $147.3 billion, a 67% jump from $88 billion over the prior twelve-month period.

Operating cash flow tells a healthier story, rising 30% to $148.5 billion on a trailing twelve-month basis. Free cash flow, the money left after all that spending, cratered to just $1.2 billion. When your operating cash flow is $148.5 billion and your free cash flow is $1.2 billion, nearly every dollar coming in the door is going right back out.

Why AWS matters more than ever

Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud computing arm, met revenue expectations for the quarter. AWS is the engine that’s supposed to justify all this spending, and so far, it’s delivering.

Analysts have pointed to AWS’s performance and optimistic forward guidance as the key reason the market isn’t punishing Amazon for burning through nearly all its free cash flow. That reasoning has contributed to a measurable reduction in bearish sentiment around Amazon’s stock.

Coinbase is reviewing its exchange infrastructure after an AWS data center cooling failure knocked several trading services offline, blocked some account access, and delayed customer balance displays. CEO Brian Armstrong called the outage “unacceptable” and said Coinbase will revisit tradeoffs around speed, co-location, and faster recovery during infrastructure failures.

Crypto exchange Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN) has explained how an AWS data center cooling failure triggered a service outage that disrupted trading, exchange access, and customer account data across the platform. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong addressed the incident on X, while engineering lead Rob Witoff detailed the recovery process and customer impact.

“We experienced an outage at Coinbase last night, which is never acceptable,” Armstrong wrote on May 8. He added that most Coinbase systems were designed to withstand downtime in one AWS Availability Zone, but the centralized exchange did not respond that way during the outage. “It is possible to make exchanges resistant to AZ failures, but this can introduce latency delays that are not desirable along with breaking customer co-location,” Armstrong stated, adding:

“Given this incident, we’ll revisit these tradeoffs to ensure we’re giving you the best possible venue to trade. At a minimum, the duration of an outage should be able to be reduced considerably when an AZ move is needed.”

Strategy CEO Phong Le says company will sell BTC only in specific cases

Strategy's Bitcoin sales will not move the markets, despite it owning more than 4% of the digital currency's maximum supply, Le said.Phong Le, the CEO of Bitcoin treasury company Strategy, outlined conditions during an interview on Friday, under which the company would sell some of its Bitcoin holdings. 

The company will sell Bitcoin to pay the dividend on its Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock (STRC), a corporate credit instrument that pays an 11.5% dividend to holders, and to defer or offset taxes, Le told CNBC. He added:

“I believe in math over ideology, and at the point where selling Bitcoin versus selling equity to pay a dividend is better for our Bitcoin per share, and for our common shareholders, we will do it.”
Le added that the company would only sell BTC to pay for the yield owed to holders of its credit instruments if the sales are “accretive” to Strategy’s shareholders, meaning the company increases the BTC per share metric.The comments came after Strategy co-founder Michael Saylor said that the company might sell portions of its BTC periodically, stoking fears among BTC investors about the potential impacts of Strategy’s sales on Bitcoin’s market price.

The Trump administration is taking its tariff fight to the highest court in the land after a federal appeals court ruled that its sweeping import duties lack constitutional authority. The stakes are enormous: roughly $107 billion in customs revenue collected between February and July 2025 could be on the line.

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled 7-4 on August 29 that tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, known as IEEPA, are unconstitutional. The court said the president doesn’t have the legal right to impose tariffs on imports using an emergency powers law that Congress never intended for trade policy.

The legal math is not in the administration’s favor

Out of 15 judges across three separate federal courts who have weighed in on the question, 11 have ruled against the administration’s authority to impose tariffs under IEEPA.

The Federal Circuit’s decision is temporarily stayed until October 14, 2025. The Justice Department filed for expedited Supreme Court review on September 4, just days after the ruling dropped.

The tariff programs affected by the ruling include the administration’s “Reciprocal Tariffs” and “Trafficking and Immigration Tariffs” that have been directed at Canada, Mexico, and China.
