Circle Internet Group CEO Jeremy Allaire said he sees “tremendous opportunity” for a yuan-backed stablecoin as digital currencies reshape global trade payments. Allaire made the remarks in a Reuters interview in Hong Kong on Thursday, predicting China could roll out a yuan stablecoin within three to five years. Stablecoins Turn Into a Currency Arms Race The comments signal Circle’s view that stablecoins have become tools for exporting national currencies. China has long sought to expand the yuan’s role in global finance, and a stablecoin could accelerate offshore adoption in trade corridors where renminbi-denominated settlement already exists. “If there’s currency competition, you want your currency to have the best features possible,” Allaire said. “This is becoming a technological competition,” Reuters reported, citing Allaire. However, Beijing has so far moved in the opposite direction. In February 2026, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) and seven government agencies banned unauthorized issuance of yuan-linked stablecoins abroad. Authorities argued such tokens could threaten monetary sovereignty. The PBOC has instead promoted its state-backed digital yuan, or e-CNY, allowing commercial banks to pay interest on digital yuan wallets starting January 2026.
