Bitcoin has continued to struggle, with the asset recently dropping below the $80,000 support level it had consolidated around for at least 12 days.

Structural signals are building to support a bullish outlook on the chart, but liquidation risk in the perpetual market is throwing up meaningful short-term headwinds that traders cannot dismiss.

Long-term holders, the group of investors known to hold Bitcoin [BTC] for at least 155 days without selling, could prove central to Bitcoin’s performance from this point.

The Bitcoin HODL Bank, which measures the unrealized profit level among Bitcoin holders, has reached a 14-month high at the time of writing. This means holders are increasingly locked into their positions and selling minimally.

That is not all. Historically, surges to this level have reflected strong bullish conviction among investors, and the indicator formed at comparable readings before both the mid-2020 and mid-2023 rallies that preceded significant price highs.

The confirmation for Bitcoin would come from the asset clearing the $82,500 resistance level it has struggled to breach for weeks. Regardless of that, structurally, Bitcoin appears primed for a rally.

Despite the bullish structural conditions from long-term holders, liquidation data reveals that taking a long position on Bitcoin in the perpetual market currently carries significant risk.

Traders who went long on Bitcoin over the past 24 hours recorded $184 million in forcefully closed positions, compared to just $4.17 million on the short side.

What this implies is that there is currently more incentive for traders to open short positions on Bitcoin, which could impact the asset and push it even lower from its present level.

Publicly-listed bitcoin miners took a beating on Friday, May 15, 2026, with every major traded mining stock dropping between 2.52% and 9.59% in a single session, even as their year-to-date gains outpaced bitcoin’s own performance by a wide margin.
Bitcoin closed the week at $77,849, down 11.1% year-to-date. Yet all of the top ten miners today sit well above that figure, and the reasons why go beyond $BTC price action. Hut 8 Corp. leads the YTD group (out of the top ten publicly-traded mining stocks by market cap) with a 123.16% gain, trading at $102.52 per share despite sliding 6.26% on Friday.

Bitcoinminingstock.io data shows the company’s market cap stands at $11.54 billion. Hut 8 has been building out artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure under a $7 billion, 15-year lease at its River Bend site, offering GPU-as-a-Service and high-performance compute capacity to enterprise clients.

Brad Garlighouse, the CEO of Financial services firm Ripple, has recently outlined why XRP stands apart from the growing number of digital assets in the crypto ecosystem, highlighting what he views as its unique characteristics and positioning within the broader market.
Speaking in a recent episode of Ripple’s “Crypto in a Minute” series—recorded at the recently concluded XRP Las Vegas 2026 event and temporarily rebranded as “XRP in a Minute” for the occasion—Brad Garlinghouse outlined several core advantages of the XRP Ledger (XRPL).

Garlinghouse reflected on the early development of the XRPL, noting that its original creators had previously contributed to Bitcoin’s core infrastructure. Drawing on that experience, he explained that they recognized an opportunity to design a more purpose-built system, one specifically engineered to address practical inefficiencies in global payments. 

According to the Ripple frontman, this narrow focus is what sets XRP apart. Rather than attempting to serve every possible blockchain use case, the network was designed with a clear priority: enabling faster, more efficient payments. He added that this original design philosophy continues to shape how the system operates today.

Garlinghouse also emphasized speed as one of XRP’s defining advantages, noting that transactions on the network typically settle within just three to five seconds—dramatically faster than many alternative payment systems. 

He further highlighted its cost efficiency, noting that transaction fees are extremely low, often just fractions of a cent. Garlinghouse added that the network can handle high transaction throughput, having already processed more than 4 billion transactions to date.
