Bitcoin slips below $80,000: Why the 'Trump rally' is hitting a wall of profit-taking

Bitcoin slipped back below $80,000 on Wednesday after a brief breakout attempt, as onchain data suggested the rally was already running into profit-taking pressure.

CryptoQuant said bitcoin’s 37% rebound from April lows still looks more like a bear-market rally than a confirmed trend reversal, with realized profits hitting their highest level since December and short-term holders increasingly exiting at a gain.

Bitcoin’s rally has pushed traders back into profit, with holders cashing out at the fastest pace since December, as recent buyers increasingly sell into strength, they wrote.

But the rebound still looks more like a relief rally than a true bull-market breakout, since profits remain well below levels seen in past sustained uptrends while unrealized gains are already high enough to tempt more selling, according to CryptoQuant. Traders are also sitting on an 18% unrealized profit margin, the highest since June 2025, a level where profit-taking has historically accelerated.

Singapore-based market maker Enflux offered a different read, focusing less on holder behavior and more on the macro catalyst that drove bitcoin’s initial move higher.

Enflux said bitcoin’s push through the $80,000 level was part of a broader risk-on reaction after President Donald Trump paused a U.S. naval operation tied to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a move that sent oil prices lower and lifted equities.

But while Enflux said the rally "makes sense mechanically," it warned markets may be overestimating the durability of the catalyst, noting that previous Trump diplomatic pauses since March either reversed within days or were misread by traders.

According to data from Blocksec’s USDT Freeze Tracker, Tether blacklisted 371 addresses on Ethereum and Tron combined. Of those, 329 freeze actions were executed on the Tron network, while 42 occurred on Ethereum, a distribution that reflects USDT’s disproportionately heavy usage on Tron, which has become the dominant chain for stablecoin transactions in emerging markets, particularly across Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa.Tether’s ability to freeze funds stems from a centralized administrative key embedded in the USDT smart contract. When an address is flagged, typically at the request of law enforcement agencies or following verified evidence of theft, fraud, or sanctions violations, Tether can unilaterally prevent that wallet from moving its funds. The mechanism has been used in cooperation with agencies including the U.S. Department of Justice and Europol.This centralized freeze capability has become a double-edged sword as critics have argued that it fundamentally contradicts the self-custody ethos of crypto, where users are supposed to have full sovereignty over their own assets. Tether and its supporters frame it as an essential tool against money laundering, ransomware payouts, and large-scale financial crime.

The scale of May’s freeze activity is notable as the freezing of over half a billion dollars in a single month suggests either a surge in enforcement requests or a broadened internal compliance sweep, or both. Stablecoins have moved from crypto niche to an institutional priority, but the next phase of adoption will depend on infrastructure, privacy and real-world usability, executives from MoonPay, Ripple and Paxos said at Consensus Miami 2026.

Richard Harrison, MoonPay’s vice president of banking and payment partnerships, said traditional finance firms are entering stablecoins faster because regulation has made the market easier to navigate.

“What GENIUS brought us was clarity,” Harrison said. “It was like a permission slip for companies to enter into stablecoins.”

Harrison said stablecoins are also a natural evolution of payments, where speed and convenience have long been limited by legacy rails. Cross-border transfers can still take days and remittances can carry steep fees, he said, while stablecoins allow near-instant, one-to-one value transfer.

Still, Harrison said stablecoins represent only a small share of global remittances today and may reach roughly 10% within five years. Business-to-business payments are already a clear use case, he said, but consumer adoption remains harder.

Jack McDonald, Ripple’s senior vice president of stablecoins, said institutional customers require regulated products, strong counterparties and trusted custody arrangements before moving meaningful volume on chain.

“For institutions to really unlock the full demand … you have to be regulated at the highest level,” McDonald said.

He said Ripple is focused less on stablecoin market capitalization than on utility, including payments, corporate treasury movement and collateral use in capital markets. McDonald said Ripple’s stablecoin complements $XRP rather than competing with it, because transactions on the $XRP Ledger still use $XRP as the native token.
