cryptocurrency by market cap, has seen its dominance in the DeFi market fall to around 54%, down from 63.5% earlier this year, as competing blockchains continue capturing a larger share of the crypto ecosystem.
Now the big question is Ethereum losing its grip on DeFi dominance? While $ETH price has recovered to nearly $2,314.

According to DeFiLlama data, Ethereum's share of total DeFi TVL dropped from 63.5% at the start of 2025 to roughly 54% this month, marking one of the network's weakest dominance levels in years.
DeFiLlama currently values Ethereum's total value locked at approximately $45.4 billion, far ahead of most competing blockchains.

The latest inflation estimates from the Cleveland Federal Reserve suggest headline CPI may rise again, reinforcing fears that the Fed could maintain higher interest rates for longer. Historically, tighter monetary policy has created pressure on high-risk assets like Bitcoin and the broader crypto market.

Technical analysts are also watching a bearish rising wedge pattern forming on Bitcoin’s daily chart. If support levels fail to hold, traders believe BTC could revisit the $70K zone in the coming sessions. Market sentiment remains cautious as institutional buying activity appears weaker compared to previous months.

Despite the bearish outlook, some investors still believe Bitcoin’s long-term trend remains strong due to growing institutional adoption and limited supply. However, short-term volatility may continue around upcoming inflation data and future Federal Reserve decisions.

According to Eugene, the fact that Bitcoin is trading at critical levels and altcoins are still consolidating could signal a new uptrend.

Eugene, posting on his own social media channel, stated that Bitcoin is currently fluctuating around $80,000, adding, “The market could start a big move in the next week. I hope it will be upward.” The experienced trader also argued that many altcoins appear ready to break out of their current trading ranges.

Eugene noted that the trading volume and open interest (OI) data in the market were also noteworthy. According to him, at current levels, a smaller amount of new purchases compared to previous periods might be sufficient to push cryptocurrency prices higher. This, he stated, indicates that investors may still be underpositioned in many assets.

According to the analyst, the key element the market needs is for Bitcoin to decisively and strongly break above the $80,000 level. Eugene said that following this breakout, major altcoins, primarily Ethereum, Solana, and HYPE, could take the lead and initiate a new uptrend. However, the trader added that prices should not experience renewed downward pressure.

At the same time, onchain data shows holders are cashing out their biggest daily profits in five months, with $BTC trading above $80,000.

Bitcoin’s Kimchi Premium is tracked by CryptoQuant’s Korea Premium Index (KPI). It measures the price gap between Bitcoin on South Korean exchanges and the global volume-weighted average.

The 2% reading is a sharp turnaround from early March, when the index had dropped to a 2.27% discount after the U.S.-Iran conflict kicked off.

Strict controls on funds and KYC checks on residency are in place in South Korea. There is almost no way to do $BTC arbitrage. The CryptoQuant KPI is used to measure real-time differences in demand between one place and another.

The premium jumps when Korean buyers buy more Bitcoin. But if they sell, the KPI can go down.

Bitcoin experiences nine volatile weeks

The swing from discount to premium wasn’t clean. CryptoQuant data shows the KPI bounced around throughout March.

Most of the month saw pronounced discounts before a brief recovery around March 27 and 28, tacked on about a percentage point. April stayed mostly positive, with some scattered dips.

The May 7 reading of 1.98% was the first time the index got close to 2% since the day before the U.S.-Iran conflict.

The premium had already cooled to 0.77% when measured against Upbit’s $BTC price and current global VWAP figures.
