Is DeFi becoming real financial infrastructure?
The conversation about DeFi revenue follows the industry’s rapid growth from speculation and memecoin trading. In his latest blog post, Andre Cronje said that DeFi in 2026 increasingly resembles functional financial infrastructure rather than an experimental crypto niche.

He cited a skyrocketing sector market of stablecoins, worth over $320 billion today, led by companies like Tether and Circle. He also pointed out that decentralized exchanges handle over $160 billion in monthly spot trading volume and that perpetual decentralized exchanges process roughly $540 billion in monthly activity.

Cronje said several lending platforms, including Aave, Morpho, and Maple Finance, now manage around $28 billion of active loans. This is a new kind of asset collateral, more directly linked to real-world assets and increasingly used as on-chain collateral. The larger point is that DeFi could be entering a more mature stage.

Some protocols are now beginning to operate more like cash-generating financial networks with measurable business performance rather than speculation. Sustainability, however, will be the next challenge.

Investors will be paying close attention to whether these protocols can generate strong revenue without depending on token incentives or aggressive growth campaigns.

Iran has delivered its response to a U.S. ceasefire proposal through Pakistani mediators. This development adds a new layer of uncertainty for global markets.

The proposal was designed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restart discussions on Iran’s nuclear program, reports The Guardian.

After the response was passed to Pakistan, it was forwarded to Washington. Tehran did not reveal the contents of its reply.

#HTX Community April Creation Contest Is Live! China’s April PPI rises 2.8%, CPI increases 1.2% year-on-year, ending three-year deflation streak

China just posted its strongest producer inflation numbers in years, and the implications stretch well beyond Beijing. The April Producer Price Index came in at 2.8% year-on-year, handily beating expectations that ranged between 1.5% and 1.9%.

The Consumer Price Index wasn’t far behind, rising 1.2% against forecasts of 0.8% to 1.0%. For an economy that spent 41 consecutive months in producer-price deflation until early this year, those numbers represent a genuine regime change.

What the numbers actually mean

The CPI figure, while more modest at 1.2%, tells a complementary story. Core CPI landed around 1.1% to 1.2%, suggesting the price increases aren’t just about volatile food and fuel categories.

A 14.1% surge in export growth has been a key driver of China’s economic recovery, pumping demand through its manufacturing base and pulling commodity prices higher along the way.

For context, China’s PPI had been negative for 41 straight months, a deflationary stretch that began in late 2022 and became one of the defining economic narratives of the post-COVID period. That streak is now definitively over.

The global macro puzzle

In the US, the most recent PPI data showed a 2.7% year-on-year reading, which actually underperformed expectations. So you’ve got the world’s two largest economies sending opposite inflation signals: China running hotter than expected, the US running cooler.

If inflation in China continues to accelerate, the People’s Bank of China has less room to pursue aggressive monetary easing. Rate cuts become harder to justify when prices are already climbing.

Meanwhile, the softer US inflation print has increased global rate-cut expectations for the Federal Reserve, creating a scenario where the two economic superpowers are potentially moving in opposite policy directions.

Gold had a rough day. Spot prices slid 0.6% to $4,684.32 per ounce on May 11, while US gold futures fell even harder, dropping 0.8% to $4,692.70.

The catalyst: President Trump rejected Iran’s response to a US peace proposal, effectively torpedoing any near-term hopes for resolving a conflict now stretching into its tenth week. That diplomatic collapse sent crude oil prices climbing, reignited inflation fears, and handed the dollar a boost, all of which conspired to push gold lower.

Why gold is losing its safe-haven shine

The mechanism is straightforward. When US-Iran talks collapse, oil traders price in supply disruption risk, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. That critical chokepoint handles a massive share of global crude shipments. Threatened supply means higher oil prices. Higher oil prices feed directly into inflation expectations.

And when inflation expectations rise, so do expectations for elevated interest rates. The Federal Reserve can’t exactly cut rates when energy costs are pushing consumer prices higher. Gold, which pays no yield, becomes less attractive relative to interest-bearing assets when rates stay high or climb further.

Meanwhile, the US dollar strengthened on the back of those same rate expectations. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for international buyers, who represent a significant chunk of global demand.

The Brazilian real has become a true outlier since hostilities in the Middle East began, becoming the best-performing currency in emerging markets, besides the Hungarian forint.

Nonetheless, even with its recent rise, analysts believe that the real rally still has legs and that a so-called perfect storm to prop up the currency’s value is brewing.
Robin Brooks, Senior Fellow at The Brookings Institution and former Chief FX Strategist at Goldman Sachs, predicts that the real “has a lot further to go,” and will overcome the 4.5 real per dollar exchange rate, which he considers the currency’s “fair value” exchange rate

Brooks states that the Brazilian real is “horribly beaten down and undervalued” and is poised to benefit from geopolitical drivers similar to those experienced when Russia invaded Ukraine. At the time, the Brent oil benchmark scaled 40%, and the Brazilian real rose 20% too.

For him, two main elements will propel the Brazilian real higher. The first is the U.S.’s willingness to end the current war in Iran as soon as possible, which will lift carry currencies such as the Brazilian real

The second driver of this predicted rise will be the uncertainty around the navigability of the Strait of Hormuz in Iran.
